Backing up for the first time

Hi everybody,

Finally, I got myself two external hard drives to back up my new MacBook and older but trusted PowerMacG5. I have backed up MacBook with no problems selecting to back up all files (it took 1.5 hours), but the desktop has two hard drives (200 and 80 GB). The external hard drive is 320GBs. I'm using SuperDuper. Can someone please advise me how to tell SuperDuper to back up both hard drives?

Cheers

iKozy

I daresay you might need to partition the external drive to achieve this. It is my understanding that Super Duper needs the whole drive for a backup.

Just a guess though...

Yes, partition the external into a 200GB, an 80GB and the rest. Then tell SuperDuper to back up each drive to the appropriate partition.

Thanks guys,

Ok, how do I partition the external. I've never done it before.

i think you may have just wasted 1.5 hours. i believe to partition the drive must be 'blank'. perhaps superduper can do the partition, or else disk utility? better wait to someone comes along who actually knows what their talking about though

Yes, if you use disk utility to partition the drive you will lose all data on it. But hey, where's the fun in doing things once? Mount your USB drice, go to "Apps", "Utilities", "Disk Utility". Now select the external drive, click on partition and setup your sizes.

There are other apps available for partitioning on the fly but I've always found it to be more reliable using disk utility.

Have fun, the night is young!

You can resize and add partitions to a disk without losing existing data on the disk, however it must be done from a terminal prompt.

If you've never used Disk Utility via Terminal, I would not recommend this path.
Clearing the disk and repartitioning it from scratch takes time, but has less potential for hair-pulling.

For those interested in non-destructive partitioning:

It works - I used it to successfully create a OSX/XP/Vista triple-boot on my MacBook.

ok, this is getting silly; the disk utility after I select the external drive does not give me the choice to clickk 'partition' - the choices are: first aid, erase, raid, restore

thanks heaps

Make sure you're selecting the drive itself not "Macintosh HD". Above "Macintosh HD" should be the hard drive itself displayed with the manufacturers name and model number.

iKozy -

This may interest you:

I used this method with SuperDuper (rather than ASR in the CLI) to partition a self-powered Firelite drive to dual boot PPC and Intel Macs.
