SATA PCI card "will this Work?"

After installing a new HD the other day I now have a spare 80 GB
I was thinking of an external enclosure for around $50 but would this SATA card work??

I have seen other's at mac retailers all over $100
is there any diff except price?

No idea, but if you bought one from a Mac retailer such as Streetwise, Epowermac or the like then it would work for sure.

A SATA card more or less has to be badged for Mac to be able to use it.
I was lucky to pick one up off eBay second hand that worked well, however you may want to look further.

From my own meddlings, SATA PCI cards based on VIA or Silicon Image (SIL) chipsets will not work in a Mac, SiiG ones will.

And if you were thinking of popping it into your PowerMac G5, you will need to find a PCI-X card, not PCI or PCI-E.

You'd be much better off buying an external SATA box that you can hook up via FireWire or USB -- then you'd have a nice big box you can use for backups or as totable storage,

some will, some won't

I'd say just about any will work provided that you don't wish to boot from it - OSX should detect the device as a standard SATA controller as they do not require drivers for operation at all.

I am about to do the same thing with my PowerMac G4 and might buy an el-cheapo IDE controller for my REV A powermac G3.
