[Rumour] Striking new iMac design?

Anyone have any idea if the iMacs will come in a slightly modified enclosure when they're updated? I'd love to see the chin disappear.

I'd love to see the whole thing disappear - and get replaced with something like these.

You'd just get motion sickness using those. I used to own the Olympus ones back in the days when PlayStation was a big hit.

Anyhow, I don't like the current design either. I really liked the lamp shape one. But before they create a new design iMac, BRING BACK THE CUBE!!!

This is the design they've been waiting for for years. The only thing I Think they'll do now is get thiner, and possibly loose 'some' of the chin.

At the moment SeaGate have thin SATA hard drives, so this may soon become a reality. It's anyone's guess. When you think about it, the iMac design is light years ahead of the competition. Even the iMac G4 was a revolution in design.

i'd like to see a solid state disk for the operating system/applications etc, and a larger sata drive as an additional internal storage device. also would love to see a faster superdrive. 8x is getting a bit old!

It might get a slight jump in speed, say 16x - They're probably trying to hold off until blu-ray or HDDVD take off! - They'll try and be the first computer company to really support this new medium, like they did when DVD burner's starting to come out.

that would be interesting to see. regarding the HD formats i've got another thread going at a windows media center site, and made a post on my blog (which needs updating). Either way, a jump to 16x in the superdrives would be lovely

Other companies have been shipping machines with Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Drives for the past 6 months.

Burners? If so, they'd be a mint. The Blu Ray burner from LG is like $4000

If they made an iMac out of laptop components the screen part (excluding stand) would be not much more than 1" thick (vs 2.5" currently) and the 17" version would weigh about 3.5kg (vs 7kg currently)...though I expect the laptop components would attract a premium on price.

Also, I'm still gunning for Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Why?
- PS3 sales will boost installed base of Blu-Ray players
- Blu-Ray capacity is greater (dual-layer is 50GB -vs- 30GB for HD-DVD)
- Future capacity increases to 4 layers and 8 layers (theoretical maximum of 200GB -vs- just 60GB for HD-DVD)
- Blu-Ray has much wider support from the movie and game studios
- JB Hi-Fi (in Australia at least) has said it won't sell any HD-DVD discs or players. It's Blu-Ray all the way

That said, HD-DVD did have a few months head start, and the discs are cheaper to manufacture. Also, I read somewhere recently that Sony beat every other major entertainment electronics manufacturer for brand loyalty.

There are going to be PS3 sales? Did Sony give you a bottle of pills? Did you mix them with alcohol?

And JB will sell whatever the fuck people want to buy. That's how business works. You sell shit people don't want.. you don't make money.

yeah im sick of the imac look. a nice thin bezel would look great - would only really work on the larger screens tho due to space.

i'm all for hd-dvd. got myself a few movies - king kong, mi3, v for vendetta, planet earth (ordered) and matrix trilogy (ordered). 1080p video is fkn awesome. no one i know wants to touch the ps3. not sure which one will win yet tho..

PS3 sales over the first 10 days weren't that far behind Xbox 360, despite it's 'massive' price tag:

Blu-ray support

Don't you think that Apple is going to support Blu-ray as they on Blu-ray disk Association board of directors.
