Would be nice if they brought back a cheap 17" LCD though, maybe $600
|
You can get 8 millisecond 17" LCD's for approx $420 that are the same color as the new mini mac's
Actually. I have one now :-)
Its a CMV CT-720D and has a zero dead pixel warranty

And if all else fails it makes a great combined computer/home entertainment unit. The Apple Rep tells me you can plug it into your television to watch dvds as well as connect it wirelessly using Airport Express to listen to your iPod over your powered speakers.
OMG! I'm so 1337

although this is damned awesome... $650AUD for 1GB RAM??????????
not too happy with that
i would've been 100% on buying one of these except for the 1 RAM slot..
it's perfect for to-be switchers though, so i'm impressed!

I think this is the death of the eMac.
Don't you? If you strip the CRT out of the eMac, you get a 1.25gig G4, with a 40/80gig Hard Drive, ATI 9200 with 32Mb RAM.... et-cetera.
|
I work in a school and I still think the eMac has things going for it in some scenarios.
Its a single power-cord and a single box. In Creative Arts where I work we can put an airport card in one and plonk it anywhere we want (just needs power)
Plus they are cheaper. iMac Mini is EDU$718 plus say $350 for a basic LCD monitor. That's $1068
The base education eMac is $939
I can see plenty of educational scope for the imac mini (espec if you already own monitors). But I don't think the eMac is dead in schools yet.

I might be the only one here who will say this, but i'm not that excited about the Mac Mini.
The main thing that attracted me to the Mac from PC was the simplicity of the all in one concept. Plug in the power cable, mouse and keyboard - and off you go.
Once converted to the Mac on this basis, it was only then that i discovered how great the apps were.
If the purpose of the new announcements are to increase market share (eat into the PC market) then i don't know that the Mac Mini will achieve this. Sure, a lot of Mac users might love it and switch over, but i don't know that PC users will make the leap from one stand alone box to another.
I certainly wouldn't have. For me, the only thing that awoke me from my slumber was the all-in-one concept. Otherwise, i would have lived happily in ignorance that PCs and Windows XP were the best thing since sliced bread.
To me, the iMac and eMac concepts still rule supreme.
Bob.

on a different angle, i'm not that excited about it either.
I'm thinking on a cube vs mini comparision here...
The cube has upgradeable video, ram, cpu, HD, optical drive, airport. The mini has upgradable ram & optical drive. The shelf life on this thing wont be anywhere near as long as the cube's has been.
The cube can take 1.5GB of (granted) SDram, where the mini can only handle 1GB of DDR. The cube can take upto a 9800pro (or 9200 without modification), where the mini is stuck with a 32mb 9200 for good. The cube takes standard IDE/ATA Hard drives, and supports them up to whatever the max size is right now - the mini, doesn't. The mini is stuck at 1.25GHz or 1.46GHz - the cube can currently reach 1.7GHz with an upgrade, and this will be likely to climb as freescale release faster chips.
Basically, i think the mini is cute, and great for switchers - but don't say it's the new cube. The cube is/was much better.

so will i
until cubes come down in price they are not worth it.
you pay a premium for them and to upgrade them you have to get special mounting brackets for cpu's,power mods for 9800 video cards

Can someone explain further about the macmini not support tiger core graphics or something? I am a little lost on that aspect... I am guessing this is some sort of effects in tiger, much like expose in the current OS.
If someone could clear it up I would be gratefull.

I'd been wondering about this too, I know Apple make mini DVI-video adapters but are standard DVI-video adapters available? I've never seen one.

This thing apparently has no fan like the Cube.
|
The (Australian) Mac mini design specs page states:
Quote:
|
Mac mini features a teensy* little fan, too, so theres no reason to hide it under your desk like an old PC to save your ears.
|
Strangely the US page mentions nothing about the fan only it being "whisper-quiet".
