looks like its mini's all around.

the upgrade to 512 ram is a must considering that the apple site says that ram must be added by a tech so i assume opening the case will void your warrenty on this.

and bluetooth will need to be done in the factory like with current macs

so - when buying one of these you'd have to add stuff like iLife or iWork (bear with me, I'm new to macs) seperately...not bundled?

is that really a bad thing though.
considering you probably void your warrenty by opening the case, hard drive upgrades are out of the question.

firewire drives are so cheap these days anyway it would cost more to upgrade the internal 2.5" drive then to buy a bigger firewire drive

ilife 05 is included free but iwork isnt.
the apple site lists that they will come with appleworks 6 so you would have to pay $119 for iwork

So does this unit only have 1 xRAM slot?

If so i think apple has made these just "shit" enough not to be too threatening.. if you add in all features you get $1450 edu for the 512MB RAM, SD, 80GHZ, 1.4GHZ with bluetooth and wireless kb.
add $350 for an LCD and you have

$1800...

iMac = $2150 base model... i think this way it could sway people to still consider an upgrade...

Pretty good at first sight, but if it only has one RAM slot and cos you have to pay for all the extras it adds up...

yes it does.
there are some pics of the internals on the apple site

here is a quote from the apple site regarding airport and bluetooth

Depending on your wireless needs, Mac mini may be upgraded to Internal Bluetooth, an AirPort Extreme Card, or both. Internal Bluetooth Modules and AirPort Extreme Cards are not user installable on Mac mini, but if these options are desired at a later date (after purchase), Mac mini may be taken to an Apple Authorized Service Provider for installation (fees may vary, depending on provider)

If you need either get it at the start or you will be paying huge fees to get it installed later

I wonder if I could plug one of these into my iBook and use it kind of like an external hard drive?
Yes you could.. boot said machine into target disk mode.. however as someone pointed out.. why bother.. it costs too much to be a 80gb portable drive...

I was thinking in on my drive to work... if only they gave the unit 1 x PCI slot... then we could add another firewire card and have atleast 2 or more external firewire drives in a RAID 1

You can daisy chain firewire drives so you can still have firewire based raid. A PCI slot would be perfect for an HDTV tuner though...

Of course you can add a firewire one. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this down the road though. At the very least I expect we'll see some matching firewire cases from 3rd parties.

Is there such a thing as a firewire hub?

yes there is.

but be careful witht firwire hubs as cheap ones are well known to blow firewire ports and on the macmini you cant afford to loose the only port

I think this is the death of the eMac.

Don't you? If you strip the CRT out of the eMac, you get a 1.25gig G4, with a 40/80gig Hard Drive, ATI 9200 with 32Mb RAM.... et-cetera.

Mac mini is the new eMac. This will also keep to the 'three type of user' mindset.

Entry Level - Mac mini
Consumer User - iMac
Power User - PowerMac

everybody wave to the eMac.

In 5 years, people will worship them like the Cube... "... I remember my first eMac, with those big dumb speakers looking out at me... such a pretty thing...."
