Digging around the Macworld forums I found this posting:

http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/...true#Post287086

Quote:

According to what I've read on Macintouch and other sites today, it would appear that although Apple is strongly recommending (virtually demanding) that you get RAM installed by an "authorized service provider," it was confirmed that they won't void your warranty for opening the machine up to swap the RAM. It was also confirmed by Apple reps at the show that the chassis is pretty easy to open up to install RAM.
Would be nice if this was indeed true. Even better would be for HDD upgrades to be included in this.

The ethernet is a non-issue. This cycle is almost predictable btw:
  • Apple release new innovative product that everyone has been asking for for years
  • half of the mac faithful are in awe and run up their credit cards one minute after the keynote
  • the other half of the mac faithful bitch about how their old machine has just been superseeded
  • days later, people from the windows world crawl out of their hole and pick a single feature that lacks compared to the high standard* they're used to
  • dvorak reviews it and scathes it
  • the mac is once again a mockery to all the windows kids
*-may be a perception only
lol, thats so true. I can't wait for the Dvorak review by the way.

Pulled from hardmac:

It is thus officially forbidden to customers to open the machine. Even PMU reset will be done from the outside, which takes:
- Unplug the power adaptor
- Wait for 10 seconds
- Press the reboot button when replugging the adaptor
- Release the button.
So this really is the deal. Only a dealer can add memory, AE or bluetooth ?
Do you really want to pay Apple $120 for a 256MB memory upgrade from 256 to 512 ?

Have a look at this Australian CNet review of the Mac mini:

http://www.cnet.com.au/pcs/desktops/0,3902...40003403,00.htm

"Functionality is further limited by the lack of Gigabit Ethernet support (the included networking jack supports only 10/100)..."

Is it just me or is this reviewer an idiot?
Yeah I noticed it didn't do gigabit.. However its not aimed at the consumer market that would honestly be looking at that.

It would of been nice if it did, but I guess in future versions it will. Infact I'd be fairly certain it will come into future revisions.

None of the Apple consumer range supports gigabit. Why is this reporter surprised? I'm not aware of many people winging about it's absense on the iMac G5 even.

I'm not suggesting it's required or even that desirable on the Mac mini.
I am suggesting that this reported is a dick, without any clue of realistic user requirements and needs.

Since when did any reporter have a clue? I worked for a newspaper once

Basically, i think the mini is cute, and great for switchers - but don't say it's the new cube. The cube is/was much better.
On the other hand, the Mini is going to make Apple richer, not poorer. Which, I think you'll agree, is a good thing.

You'd hope gigabit ethernet would be standard equipment these days - my last PC motherboard had it onboard, and I bought that some time ago. I'm suprised people are pooh poohing it, like they are happy it was left out.

And for the mini mac - no user serviceable parts, no expansion slots - is this the return
of the original jobsian vision of the mac? Anyways, I'm hoping the emac gets a nice
discount so I can snap one up as, looks aside, they are pretty much the same machine.

I've got to ask, what difference does it make...unless you're on a network that uses gigbit switches.

ahh, the Mini isn't for geeky computer fluent consumers like us. i believe it's targeted towards switchers and those who intend to use it as it is, without even much upgrading. so $799 is a good price to start. we however, would like ram upgrades, bigger drives, bluetooth, wifi, and such. most people still only know peanuts about these. so i think they've got it just right.
