Have you been patient? Data disks will mount quickly, when DVDs and music CDs are slower. Your DVD Movies require DVD Player (which I assume, you have) and your music CDs are probably waiting for iTunes to engage its Library. These are events I havenoticed since updating to OS 10.4.9 and iTunes 7.0.2
If it's not a patience issue.. then someone else may know, hopefully.

Not a patience issue. If I log in as a different user all seems to work so it appears something to do with my home folder and my user. I have a test log in that the disk mount on when I use it.

My mac is emac G4 running OS 10.3.9

Open System Preferences - CD's & DVD's and have a look at the option "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD) and make sure it's specified as "Open Finder" (or "Ask what to do")

no show re CD & DVD

similar here with my 14" G4 iBook running 10.4.9
and I've somehow finished up with several "Untitled CD" or "Untitled DVD" s which cannot be ejected and removed from the side bar list

if the Grabbed screen shot works I'll show you - no it didn't, why does Grab save tiff files but this forum wants jpegs? How can I easily convert them?

I've just used Toast Titanium 5.2.1 and somehow the copied data, music, ... gets onto the new CD and then people are happy.

I thought the invisible CD problem was just me, maybe it is system wide?

David

I also have 10.3.9 and I do come across this same problem now and then,

one thing though

is the drive you are trying a new blank DVD on a DVD-ROM drive?
I have an external Sony firewire burner and everything works on that though some of the discs I burn wont work on the DVD-ROM drive on my G4 I think the format is just not supported, like dual layer or some of the obscure dvd formats - +rw whatever.

You have to flash your optical drive to accept new formats, try Patchburn

Thanks for the replies guys. I trashed finder preference file and reset the preference panel to launch finder on inserting new disk and have had success. Disks now mount.

I think your initial problem was simply that in Finder Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the Desktop, you didn't have "CDs, DVDs and iPods" ticked.

Thanks Dave, I think you are probably correct. The problem only occurred after I tried to get a DVD +R video file copy via Toast 7 (didn't work) and couldn't get Quicktime 7 to play the video, so downloaded VLC to play the .AVI file. Somewhere in all of this the preferences must have been changed as this problem only occurred after doing these things.
