With all the talk of the new iMac it got me thinking about how much the older powermacs could devalue.. if they bring out a 1.25GHZ G4 (probably be the minimum speed that it could be) with USB2.0, firewire, dvi and a Radeon 5200 card it would would be a much better buy @sub $1000 than a 2nd hand powermac G4 upto say 1GHZ single CPU - which still sell for over $1k.
Some people still buy G4 450 mhz for $500 or over..
Anyways do you think that older PM's will lose alot in resale value...
i ask cos i am now macless AGAIN.. i had a few serious buyers for my Dual 500mhz machines and i ended up selling the spare one i had and my machine which i recently got. I was thinking that it would be hard to get $850 and $900 for a Dual G4 500Mhz after these new ones are announced..
Everytime i have anticipated a price drop i have been right so hopefully i didnt get rid of my PM for nothing.. if a new headless iMac comes out that can be bought with SD for ~$1000 on edu i will be mighty pleased...
Anybody else going to sell their Powermacs/imacs/emacs etc?

i doubt a headless imac with the same specs as a g4 tower, will be anywhere near as quick.
Like bus speed and other junk, plus upgradability, if a blokes looking for a quick g4 to load with protools and some basic video editing card, a headless imac will be next to useless...

and dont forget, IF this new mac is introduced it will be a single processor machine. Performace will not be as good as a dual processor 800MHz, 867, 1GHz, 1.25 etc

Well, I think it all depends.
The reason that the PM G4's have held their resale value is because they are the last PM to boot in OS 9. Which makes them highly desirable for graphic artists, pre-press. etc.
If the new unit supports OS 9 and is fairly beefy then yeah, I think the G4's price will drop. But if it doesn't boot OS 9 or it's a crappy machine then the PM G4's will still be in fairly high demand.

I doubt it'll boot OS9... i've attached an image of Steve putting OS9 to rest.

Hey Disko, where did you find the images? I have been looking for some older Keynotes of Steve's recently, and there is a lack of them on any search site.

Well, if you can get a similar box for say, $850. A similar spec *used* PowerMac shouldn't be any more than $700 realistically.
Dual CPU machines would be worth a little more, but yeah, it will decrease the price of used machines *nod*

But G4 towers are so much more upgradable than whatever the headless iMac would be.
A lowly machine such as a Sawtooth G4 can take a few hard disks, optical drives, CPU upgrades, numerous PCI cards ... and match current specs.
They've been fetching top dollar for some time now, an equivalent PC costs much less - so about time they're affordable!

I doubt apple will put the G5 into this computer - it will eat away sales of iMac - for existing "mac educated" buyers.
But if its a high enough spec'ed unit it could convert alot of the "others" users.. say a 1.5GH G4, with 80GB HDD and SD for $1000-$1100 on EDU. That with a 17" LCD or existing screen makes a damn cheap mac. And if it can render and do stuff AS FAST AS the G4 powerbook equivalent it will be awesome.
It would be better than an old 733 or 867 with no USB2.0, 40GB and a CDRW. (which go for over $1k. - I M O
I dont think this will happen tho.. it doesnt seem right from the marketing point of view. They made the eMac shit enough not to intefere with other macs sales, so i think they will do the same with this one.

If iLife 05 has more multimedia stuff aimed at TV then a cheap headless iMac like this would be very attractive as long as the HDD can be upgraded to 160 or more... and s-video out etc

It had to happen and I already know a few people who are already looking to buy one because they previously thought macs were too expensive. Hey we might even be able to afford a mac for mum now.

Not so sure that the eMac is s**t
It is desperately in need of a speed bump
but then so is all Apple stuff
let's hope IBM can fix their supply problems
Here's some barefeats benchmarks for you:
http://www.barefeats.com/piei.html
INSIGHTS:
1. When it come to CPU "crunch," the eMac can definitely "run with the pack."
