Buying a Mac Pro tomorrow...

So i've got about 3200 bucks as of midday tomorrow, so i'm thinking i'm gonna go spen it on one of those shiny new computer thingies i keep hearing about, you knwo the internet comes on those now too!

but seriously i'm gonna blow it on a Mac pro, edu discounted the 2.0 ghz model, what experience do people have with these? how are they in your opinion? any really big problems? and lastly...

recommend me a decent recording card (Sound) 8ch or so thats compatible.

Jim.

You should wait Jimbo.

Here's why: Days Since Update 198 (Avg = 206)

We're literally days away from the next update which could be dual quad core (total of 8 cores) and a new case (as rumored). I'm in the same position... I have the money and I'm itching to buy something. We must be strong. Can't give in!

Good: MOTU Traveller
Better: Metric Halo Mobile I/O

Both are FireWire and Intel friendly.

but i've really only got 3k and the posibility of more is a bit far fetched.. won't the price go up with quad cores? will there still be a budget 3000 dollar model availible?

ok, i'll level with you, my loan is approved, and i'm going down tomorrow to get my cash...

Things will be shuffled around a bit, but when quad cores are released, they'll be the new high end, the lower end will become a bit faster (2.66 dual dualcores perhaps) and you'll get a little more for your $$.

Of course, the -average- time for an update is coming up, but Apple have gone more than a year between releases for some models, at times. Whether they'll do that with this generation of Mac Pros is anyone's guess. You might buy one tomorrow and find you missed out on a speed bump, or you could be waiting until WWDC in the middle of the year for a new model. It's luck o the draw with Apple and release dates, mostly.

This is amazing logic; sure, the average update period is reported, but nothing about its variance... What if the variance was 60 days?

I wouldn't be hanging out for the quad-core: http://www.hardmac.com/articles/72/ Hardmac has the scoop on performance right there.

AFAIK there's not really anything on the horizon (other then the mostly unnecessary quad-core) until Q3/Q4 this year. Then the next iteration of the Xeon will be out. That's probably too long for you (I'm also in the market for a Mac Pro, and I also want to get one as soon as they are updated, but I don't see the point in the octo-Mac-pro).

Also, remember that octo-core means more power consumption. More electricity bills. More heat output. More fan noise. etc.

BTW for a soundcard, go for MOTU, they are the cheapest that will pass for "pro" quality. More expensive may be nice, but it's not justifiable for amateur usage unless you're loaded. MOTU have a new firewire box that has 8 mic pres on it that you may be interested in. I just got a MOTU Ultralite - it is a fantastic audio interface.

Jimbo,

Is this purchase going to be used in money making immediately?

If not, survive on what you have at least until a Leopard announcement so you can get it free/cheap through the Up To Date program. You dont have to wait for it to ship, just the announcement!

You've been here for long enough to know all this :-) Patience grasshopper!

I use www.allclassifieds.com.au - I've sold all of my old Macs there - I usually get a bite within a couple of days. I've sold an eMac, a G4 iMac and a G5 iMac all in the last year. I tend to put the price slightly under what they are selling for on e-bay. Not sure if a G4 tower is as easy as an all in one though.

What is the model BTW? I need a new server
