I think my iMac has died :(

OK,

So I was having trouble with Safari crashing and then eventually not opening. I verified the disk and found it had minor errors which needed repairing. I repaired it and still Safari would not open. When i tried to download software to the mac it kept crashing on me. So last night i backed up everything on my mac and did an erase and install. i tried a couple of times as I was getting errors when installing. Anyway i finally installed the OS again and when I tried to download the 10.4.8 update from a .dmg file the iMac crashed again. Well that was the last time it booted as now it just hangs on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the fans kick into overdrive. I've tried rebooting while holding down the Comman+option+P & R keys but to no avail. I've pulled the back off and pressed the two buttons inside which I think is supposed to reset the mac in some way, and still nothing. I thought the HD might have over heated or something so I left it over night and tried to reboot it this morning. i think it's time to head off to Apple Centre Moonee Ponds to make use of the APP I purchased.

Sounds like a dead hard drive.

Do you have a firewire drive you can try booting to (or another Mac you can boot from)? Alternatly when you boot the install DVD does everything seem ok? (i.e. it boots to the dvd fine). You could try runnin a bunch of things in disk utility but to me it sounds like a borked hard drive.

I've got an RDO tomorrow so I'm just gonna head down to the Apple Centre and book it in and let them work their magic. I'v been thinking of upgradig to a C2D as the G5 gets really hot sometimes.

Double post sorry,

What I'm concerned with is that if I need a new HD how will that effect my iTunes music account? Because I was unable to de-authorise the other dead HD (if it is dead and that's the problem.....).
