Hi all,

Since we had a power surge, my iBook G4 is having an odd problem. I'm about to head away for Xmas so don't want to take the Mac back to the shop for repairs until I get back cause it's still usable.

Whenever the iBook is put into sleep mode (ie Apple menu --> Sleep, close lid or a scheduled sleep) it powers off instead of sleeping. I can power it back on by pressing the power button, but I figure this is not really good for the OS. The sleep light flashes briefly while it goes down, but then the machine powers off.

I've tried resetting the PMU and resetting the NVRAM but neither has worked. This occurs when the power is plugged in, or running off batteries. Aside from that the system appears to be running fine. Any ideas folks?

thanks

Looks like the PMU is fubar, which means a new logic board is needed. Nothing you can do.

YAY!!!

Seriously though.

I found that my G4 iBook was not happy with OS X 10.3.6.

It would go into sleep more as per normal. Then when I opened the lid to use it, it would sit there for 30 seconds, then go back to sleep mode with the lid still open, while I am waiting for something to come up on the screen.

Hitting Enter woke it up again. But it hasn't done this since going to 10.3.7

Moral of the story: Update if you haven't already.

Otherwise, follow Currawong's advice.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had upgraded to 10.3.7 hoping it would fix the problem, but it's still there. 10.3.7 does seem a bit snappier in terms of performance, especially in regards to the UI (eg dock doesn't slow down as much when lots of apps are open).

I'll take the iBook back to the shop when I get back from interstate. Any idea on how long a logic board would take to fix/replace?

Well,

If you had read the "iBook Saga" you'd know that it could take anywhere from 1 week to 3 months. Depending on which way you look at it. :P

Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd share some good service!
Got back from holidays and took the iBook down to get looked at on Monday, got it back today with a new logic board! That's a pretty good turnaround in my books!

All up and running fine now. This is the second time I've had it back for repairs in the first six months. How many times before it's considered a lemon and get a replacement ). Or maybe I should look at extending the warranty on this thing.

Or I could regail you with tales of my iBook, I haven't been on for ages due to it being fubar. But my support guy at Apple Au called yresterday and it looks like i get... a full replacement iBook! got 933, will get 1.33 model! fingers crossed.
But it sounded to me like PMU, so well done on new logic board. I'm on my second, with a third ready to put in if Apple knock me back...
