Thumbs up

G'dall all !

I have been searching the net for well-priced RAM (the RAM prices on the Apple website are criminal !!! <_< ) for my new G4 1.33 Powerbook.

I have come across this website ...

http://www.epowermac.com.au/product.asp?P_...eHistory=basket

... that is selling 512MB RAM for $165. This seems to be well priced, but it is not genuine certified Apple RAM. Is this something to be worried about ?

Is there REALLY any difference between the ludicrously priced Apple 512 MB RAM ($455) and the epowermac RAM at $165 ???

Has anyone bought RAM from www.epowermac.com.au. Is it OK ?

Thanks for any help.

If epowermac says it works in a mac, then it does.

They're legit.

just buy apple ram and get it install at the apple centre. its not worth it to save a few hundred dollars and end up braking a thousand dollar machine. Plus warranity is void if you get non recommended brands.

I disagree with designers_hub on this - Ram is a user installable part. And epowermac (who specialise in mac gear) will not sell you ram that can screw up your system.

Ram isn't worth the price apple charge for it in my opinion.

And Apple's "Genuine" ram is just the cheapest stuff they could get their hands on in bulk at a particular time anyway.

Buying you own ram is much better. At least then you get to control the brand and specifications.

I got my 512 MB SO-DIMM from epowermac for the same model powerbook back in June, it works flawlessly.

I live in WA and it was here in under 5 business days.

There is no such thing as "Apple Genuine RAM" as they usaully use Samsung RAM anyway.

If you buy RAM with a lifetime guarentee, you should be right.

Just for people's info, RAM manufacturers actually only make the board and solder the chips on. They batch-buy chips from various manufacturers according to the specifications and quality required.

Thanks for your speedy replies guys !!! Helped me solidify my decision

I just bought a stick of 512 MB RAM from epowermac, they seem to present themselves as a reasonbly proffesional online business.

I must say that i REFUSE to spend $450 on 512MB RAM purely on principle... i would love to see the mark-up that is on "geniune" Apple RAM

Cool

have been watching this thread - i'll be putting a 1GB stick of this bargain RAM into the empty slot in my PBook when i return to oz in March/April for a 3 week stint.. And lucky for me i'll get the tax back when I leave the country using the TRS (yet again!!, meaning $431.82 instead of $475.00) this will mean it will cost me only £170, when the UK Apple Store on-line lists their 1GB sticks for £400+

RAM seems a bit more expensive in Europe - maybe its Australia's proximity to Asia that makes it cheap, i dunno...

if anyone has any dramas with this gear, can they post details here please..

thanks for letting us know about this Beagleboy..

You're probably right, and having a zillion Chinese kids get their parents to sponsor import businesses etc which they sell the product on at a 5% or $5 profit margin

I made friends with the middle-aged owner of a regular Chinese PC shop. He seemed to know what he was talking about, and my G5 is very happy with the RAM I bought from him.

i see.

but in the terms and condition if you upgrade yourself and make any damages the warranity is void.

doesn't mean that if you come accross any problems after the self installation apple can blame it on the self installed ram?

or can you get therama dn get a apple staff to install it. yeah of course anyone can install ram, its just the legal mubo jumbo.

As far as I know, it's only the part you touch that the warranty is void for. So, in the case above, only the RAM would be void from warranty.

Hi All,
Thought I might add a little info to this subject about Apple and there warranty.
You can install non apple ram, into your machine. The void warranty part comes into that if you do not follow Apple's directions for the install. If you dont discharge, break something, drop a screw inside, then warranty is voided.
Apple make it very clear, that they dont care if you install non Apple branded ram. The only issue is if you have problems, then the machine should be brought back to standard before they will fix an issue.

Some Apple Stores use the Non Apple Memory situation to make an extra sale. By saying the warranty will be voided with non Apple Memory. This is in fact incorrect.

Hope this helps

This is simple:

If the user manual tells you how to do something (upgrade RAM, install Airport, etc) then its allowed.

If you look in some owners manuals for cars, you are in fact allowed to nearly do the service yourself.
