iMac Intel Won't Boot/Display Issues

This is on behalf of a mate.

Rev A Intel Mac. It was performing normally and he experienced white diagonal lines that broke up the display. He lost all movement with the cursor and did a force reboot by powering down the machine.

At this point it refused to power up. I suggested to unplug from mains power, which he did, and try again. He gets the normal booting sequence but at the point where loginwindow process shoould begin the display error appears again.

He is about to try the AHT CD but he can boot from the Install CD and has done a disk repair using Disk Utility.

Any suggestions?

Reinstall OS X. If that doesn't work take it in to be looked at. If it gets to the login window then all hope is not lost.

It doesn't actually get to the login window, but from what he has described to me, it gets to the point where it should start loading the login window and thats where the display error begins again.

Seems like something hardware-wise is stuffed...can you boot it off the install DVD? Holding down the D key will bring up the hardware test.

I remember I got weird video issues when I had a badly-seated RAM DIMM. After re-seating it, everything was good again.

Thanks Curra

Did the hardware test and negatory. He can boot off the DVD - he can get into Disk Utility from it

I don't think he has been playing with the RAM, but I will get him to pull it and see if it makes a difference.

Any other suggestions that anyone has?

I'll second that. Get any critical data off and do an erase install.
