Target Disk Mode and Drives!

Hello,

I want to have my Powermac G4 400Mhz on target disk mode so that all of the drive show up on my other machine not just the boot Hard drive can this be done?
If so how?
thanks

According to Apple Support: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives.

Looks like your only option is to network them.

Im reviving an old thread. It seems I found out about this too late but perhaps you guys can give additional inputs.

Im working on a video project that requires a lot of hard drive space and currently my 3 firewire external hds (250+250+120) just wont cut it. I do not want to add more clutter to my desk by buying more external firewire hds so I thought I could store everything a second hand Powermac G4 dual 533 Digital Audio that I just bought. I bought a pci sata card so I could install at least 2 sata hds since I need 500gb more for my project.

My main editing machine is an iMac G5 revb 2Gb Ram 250Gb Sata and using Final Cut Pro.

Initially I thought I could put the the Powermac G4 into firewire target disk mode but after reading this thread, I learned I couldnt access those sata hds. So what options do I have left???

Will connecting my powermac to the imac G5 via ethernet suffice for editing?

Connect the G4 via firewire to your iMac and network through the firewire...boom!...400mbit networking. (can't remember if the DA is gigabit ethernet or not...if it is then gigabit ethernet them instead).....then all you do is share the drives in the G4.

Hmmm I have never tried networking via firewire.

Just read that final cut pro using ethernet is not possible as this will cause dropped frames. --http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305131

Bartron, will give that firewire networking a try. Thanks!

An FYI for anyone else reading this, if you connect a PowerBook or MacBook pro via target disk mode (possibly iBooks as well, but I have none to test this) you also get access to the optical drive. I've booted machines which have only had a CD drive with a DVD using my MPB in target disk mode this way.
