Basically I updated a friends iMac G5 1.8 17" today from 10.3 to 10.4 & iLife 04 to iLife 06. The problem is that the nvidia FX5200 video card is not supporting quartz extreme or core image as it should. What this means (aside from no ripple effect in dashboard - boo hoo) is that iMovie 06 does not work because it required quartz extreme for themes/effects etc.

I googled the problem & came up with this link from apple

That lists the supported video cards for quartz extreme - the system profiler screen capture that it shows on the page is identical the video hardware in the iMac in question.
Theirs shows "Quartz Extreme : Supported".
Mine shows "Quartz Extreme : Not Supported"

I ran the "Upgrade Option" when I installed 10.4 & have installed (& Reinstalled) 10.4.8 combo update plus all other updated available.

To the best of my knowledge & to the best I can ascertain they have had no video problems up till now. In fact their son used to play nanosaur2 all the time & now it wont start with the error "OpenGL could not initialize your video card for 3d"

Has anyone got any hints before I try a wipe & reinstall from scratch (something I'm really trying to avoid)

Fear Not - I forgot about the wonder that is OS X. Why was I avoiding doing a fresh install ??

Just chose "backup system, Install & Import Users" option. All is right with the world again :-)

I think I've been using windows too much :-)
