Default iPod saves soldier's life

Check out these photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/tiki/44...ol-appleusers/ of what happens when an AK-47 meets an ipod.

I wonder if they will become standard issue now for all soldier's.
Good to see apple might replace his ipod.

The 1 to a million chance the iPod was in the right position and was able to hold off the gun shot is lowered again to a much less chance due to the fact that this ipod isn't any normal iPod, its probably the only HP iPod ever sold :-P

Some time ago HP saw how cool the iPod was and wanted a peice of the action, so they bought right to engrave HP onto them and sell the ipods as their own, they were only available in the US and were sold at the same price as a standard iPod there was no diferenced other than the branding between the iPods

Dewy's correct. Lots of American companies engrave logo's etc on the back. I have a nano with the company logo and name "Chemicon" they sell biological reagents for the life sciences

I can't believe you guys don't remember the hPod!

It wasn't just the same as a 3rd-party company engraving its logo on the back, HP was actually selling it!

Also, when HP bought the right to market the iPod under their name, Apple also forfeited any responsibility for it. Thus, if your HP iPod breaks down, Apple service techs will not touch them. You have to go entirely through HP, as it is a "HP" product and if you run the Serial Number of a HP ipod through Global Service Exchange (GSX, the online worldwide service database for apple service) it will come up as "HP product, not covered by any apple limited warranty."

I had good, sadistic fun telling customers I couldn't help them at all. *insert cheesy evil laugh here*

By the sounds of it, the body armour most of the poor buggers there have been equipped with is from the Vietnam War and as effective as wearing a doona. Judging by that pic, the iPod absorbed a helluva lot of force - I'm sure the guy was glad he had it there.

On another note, WTF was the guy doing carrying an iPod in his gear on patrol?! There's a fuss being made about pedestrians not paying attention to motorists and cyclists and getting injured, but this guy was in Iraq for crying out loud.

A 7.62 mm round fired from an AK-47 at point blank range. I wouldn't even wager money on that yet alone my life. As tintinaujapon said, the iPod was able to wash off an significant amount of force allowing the armour to stop the round.

The AK47 is the gun, not the ammo. The soldier would definitely be dead if he'd been hit from a few feet away with an armour piercing round. Even if he'd had a first generation brick-like iPod.

EDIT: He probably would have had a good chance with a Zune though.

I have serious doubts that an iPod would help armour stop something it otherwise wouldn't.. with current body armour you can take a hit from 762 at close range and have it not penetrate.. or so the boffins tell us.

The current Joy of Tech must be referring to this incident:

Well it appears the soldier himself agrees that the ipod wouldn't have made a difference:
http://havanalion.com/2007/04/08/ipo...he-real-story/

I would find it impossible for the ipod to make much of a difference, the chrome backplate is so soft that even carrying it around in a pocket causes it to become severely scratched and in some cases it will become very warped.
