I doubt it is the backlight, as the light is emitted from a solid surface (not one behind each pixel). It could be that the LCD in your iPod is beginning to fail, or it could be that there is excess moisture inside your iPod trapped behind the LCD.
I would look to moving everything off your iPod for the time being, and then doing a hard reset (search at support.apple.com for the right instructions for your model) then plug it back into your computer and let iTunes update its software to current, then put your music back on. If a hard reset does not help with the dark pixels, leave the iPod switched off but somewhere warm for a few hours to see if it was a moisture problem -- the heat should dry out any excess moisture inside the case.
