Default Help? Ongoing iPod mount problems

Hi all.

I've been having this problem with my iPod fer ages, but this morning it got me worse.
I have a MacBookPro (Core 2 Duo) and a 5.5G 30gig iPod.
Both OSX and iPod firmware are up to date.

The problem is that the iPod rarely mounts on the first try. I've tried both USB ports, tried connecting when iTunes is open, closed, visible, hidden. Tried with the iPod on, off, hold switch on/off.

I'd say that about 90% of the time, I connect it and it wond mount, then I need to restart the iPod (menu+centre button thingo) and it'll mount.

That sucks, but I've been content with it, because it's easier that trying to find a solution.

BUT, today, it went crapola. Wouldn't mount regardless, and then suddenly, it's mounted, but OSX warns me that it's connected via USB 1.1 !!(?!)

So I'm at work now, but I'm asking you, my wonderful Brains Trust, where I should start looking when I get home tonight. Is it a hardware issue? OS? cable?
Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour? Any ideas?

Cheers.

Sometimes i see problem ipods that won't mount. These are the steps that i try to follow:

Reboot the iPod (menu+select for 10 seconds) then as it starts, put it into disk mode (hold play+select on start up). Connect it to your computer. If it recognises it, great. If not, keep unplugging it and plugging it in until it does. Also try extra resets to make it mount. At work, i use a dock connector cable that plugs in with both firewire & USB2.

Once it is mounted, try formatting with iTunes. If that doesn't work, fire up disk utility or 'disk management' in windows and format the ipod to whatever file system you like.

After that, iTunes *should* recognise it and offer to restore it for you. If it doesn't do that, then you've got yourself either a shiny paperweight or ipod mod fodder depending on how you look at it.

Thanks, Disko...
I'll try these funky options tonight/tomorrow. If they don't work, I suppose I've got myself a Warranty Job...
Baffles me thatit connected at USB 1.1 this AM though... crazy stuff...

Do you have Applecare? I had similar problems and (over the phone) Applecare diagnosed it as a hardware problem (very similar steps as described by Disko). My ipod is being replaced under Applecare.

It could be due to the latest version of iTunes. I noticed it's suddenly started warning me that I'm using USB1.1 instead of USB2, and a mate had his whole USB hub go down because it took exception to USB1.1. Might be worth downgrading to a previous version to see if it solves the problem ...

i get the same issue with my 30gb. Connected to my iMac, that's through a powered hub that powers my keyboard (apple), and my shuffle dock, normally it's just the keyboard and iPod cause i don't connect both at the same time. Although i did try that and the shuffle worked fine, restarted 30gb and that worked fine also.

I'm a bit baffled about it, just took it like the iPod needed a reformat, and havn't been bothered doing that yet, so, yeah.

my suggestion,... have it replaced under warranty and keep an eye on it heron.
hard disk ipods are susceptible to problems like any external drive. over time they need to be rebuilt/formatted and inevitably replaced. interface boards are also susceptible to damage by virtue of you plugin in and out to sync, charge etc.

sorry, not much help on this..
