It's very unusual for the /Applications folder to be invisible unless one has set it to be so or renamed it to /.Applications (as all file/folder names beginning with a dot are invisible.) And, one certainly wouldn't want to rename the /Applications folder as it would mess a lot of things up including Software Update.

The first thing I suggest doing is running AppleJack (10.3.9 and above) to make sure your OS is in good shape:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667 <-AppleJack

You can set visibility attributes of folders with Developer Tools installed which is on your OS X install disk which came with your Mac.

Refer here to change your /Applications folder attributes if you're running Tiger 10.4.5 or above and DO NOT have Developer Tools installed:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...&query=setfile

Your basic syntax to make your /Applications folder visible would be:

/path/to/SetFile -a v /Applications;killall Finder

Let us know if anything is confusing here.

If you have been using an Alternate file browser such as Path Finder, its Get Info window has an option to make files (and directories) invisible. It is possible you ticked this by mistake.

I am not sure if the real finder has this option or not.

Also if you look under Accounts in System preferences there are numerous user restrictions you can place on users other than the Administrator.

Among these are the use of a Simple Finder, and the ability to lock users out of certain applications, or even out of directories such as the Applications folder. Worth checking out.
