Hi Guys

I'm looking at going down the wireless route soon.

I'm hooking up a MDD g4 and an old style iMac 400, both of which natively support the older 11mbps 802.11b Airport Cards with the main purpose of being able to connect to a 512 broadband connection - networking speed between them is less important.

Knowing that the G4 can also support 54mbps with a PCI wireless card, what I want to know is:

Would I notice any difference in internet speed between the 802.11g and 802.11b?

cheers

not always, but I do, but I think that is because I push my internet connection to the limit, if you get what i mean!

You would notice it more if you transfer files between computers!

802.11b with perfect signal etc... typically does about 600kb/sec throughput... so unless you got cable, I can't see you doing more then 600kb/sec throughput. Which would mean it won't affect your internet transfers. However if you intend on transfering large files on your LAN, then 600kb/sec is fairly slow when transfering huge amounts of data via the gigabytes.

802.11g speeds vary from equipment.. typically I do about 2.5MB/sec with good signal etc.

YMMV

Your wireless connection (regardless of standards, ie: 802.11b or g) will be faster then your net connection.

Also, this topic has been discussed before, in detail on these forums, search.

Essentially, your net connection is 512kbps. (88KB/s - Theoretical speed)

Your 802.11b (airport) wireless is 11Mbit. (Approx 1.3MB/s - Theoretical speed)

And your 802.11g (airport extreme) wireless is 54Mbit. (Approx 6.75MB/s - Theoretical speed)

As you can see. Your net connection is not fast as your network speed. Even the slowest (802.11b) network will still perform a little over 10 Times faster then your net connection.

So, regardless of your network speed, your net connection will not suffer.

Exaggerated example:
If the specs were switched, and your net connection was 10MB/s and your network was only 1.3Mbit/s then you'd be using about 10% of your speed.

Cheers guys That answers I all my questions thanks

I thought that the above might be the case, but wondered if there were other factors involved that I hadn't condsidered or didn't know about. Oh, and pipsqeek, of course I searched!!! But couldn't find this question answered specifically!

cheers
