I trust members will be able to help with this question.

Have a G4 Tower, Dual 500MHz Gigabit Ethernet, and wish to place a larger HDD in the machine. Is it possible to install new drive as a second slave drive, copy contents of present HDD to the slave, then remove both HDD and install the new drive as the master (only) with system software intact or am I faced with a clean install, installing software etc etc, please?

Well, you *could* do that, but I wouldn't. A clean install is always the best option

Yes. If you're running OSX, you'll need to use Carbon Copy Cloner, and run that from a third drive or specially made bootable CD. I've done it a few times.
