I have a g4 733 mdd and a spare g4 867 cpu (genuine, pulled from a dead 'puter from the same series). I want to upgrade the powermac by changing the cpus. I have had a bit of a search of the net and I can find some articles on upgrading but they all refer to 3rd party upgrade cards. I am thinking one of two possibilities:
1. I can just swap cpus and it will work, or (more likely)
2. I can swap cpus, and change a few jumper setting on the logic board and it will work.
Anyone have any experience or suggestions about upgrades?

If each CPU originates from an MDD, it will be a straight swap - the CPU muliplier is controlled by the CPU daughtercard itself and not the motherboard - so there is nothing to adjust. If you feel like some soldering, that 867 should reach 933 or perhaps 1Ghz fairly easily

Have fun,

JB

thanks, thats what i was hoping the answer would be. What I am actually doing in total is adding a 250gb sata drive to replace the 2x 180gb raided drives (which are moving to the server), upgrading the video (that's been a long time coming, but I finally get a weekend off the house renovations this week) and changing the case fan (to see if it improves the tv reception on the installed tv tuner). So I may pull out the soldering iron and have a fiddle (although my initial thoughts on that mod were to practise on my g4 400 server in case I stuff it up).
if you have a good set of instructions for the overclocking happy to have them.

PS 1gb would be good, so I can use a video cam

Like Byrd said. Overclocking is a definite prospect. A rule of thumb to work by is not to attempt more than 1.0 x PLL multiplier (i.e in this case 133MHz) without having to change other things like CPU core voltage. For further information pertaining to MDDs see Atomics site.

I knew there was a reason why I drank beer: to stop me thinking of how i could mod my g4 mdd by adding multiple fans!

the cpu upgrade went well, straight in as you all suggested. I also added a firewire card, swapped some fans etc. still to do the video card upgrade.
One small thing, the machine booted properly, except it did not chime.
Next question can I add the 733cpu to a sawtooth g4 400 logic board?

you mentioned that you're putting a 250g SATA drive in the G4!
i am going to put thesame in my G4 MDD, but told to get the "IDE" not "SATA"!
what's the difference, and is 250g the max the system would read?

thanks

You can but there are a couple of issues to be dealt with in order for it to work. The 733MHz card WILL interfere (insufficient clearance) with the 33MHz ATA bus motherboard connector that drives the CD/DVD and ZIP drive (if fitted) and will need to be removed for the card to fit (it will hang over the side of the logic board). Also a 12 volt connector will have to be added to the CPU daughterboard to provide power that is not supplied through the Sawtooth CPU daughterboard socket.
