Exclamation

Hi all, Hope someone can help'
Been given a G3 233mhz PowerPC for free, Problem no monitor with it ,was going to use a spare PC crt but different video plug. Can a adaptor be bought and whats the best O/S for this system. Have played around with Computers for 20years, but never tried a Mac.
Kindest Regards

I'm not sure about the adaptor, but I would think OS 9 or 8 should do justice.

Mac OS 10.1 or 10.2 would work okay, and would best give you an idea on the way Macs are today (and hopefully convince you to buy a newer Mac!)

Yes, an adaptor can be purchased (try asking here on the forums).

Ebay throws a few of those adapters around on occasion. Pretty old machine though. Don't go expecting anything fancy...

Beige G3? It can run OS 9.2.2 very well, and this is enough for web browsing and other basic tasks. If you have 256MB+ of RAM, 10.2 is officially supported by Apple. The biggest let down of running OS X on a beige G3 is its stock 2MB video, which is very slow with OS X. You could pick up a PCI video card (which will have a standard VGA connector) such as a Radeon 7000 or 9200 which will help things along considerably. At the same time, the hard disk can be replaced with another IDE drive, along with the CD-ROM with a CD burner or the like (although, Revision A models use SCSI - later revisions use IDE optical drives).

10.3 and later versions of OS X are not supported on Beige G3s; but you can run them with a third party utility called XPostFacto. However, using this utility requires some expertise

They're nice machines to work with - I'm currently maxing out a beige G3 with third party 466Mhz G3 CPU, heaps of RAM and HD. Having problems with 10.3 though - OS 9 keeps crashing when I try to switch to OS X.
