Hi all, New to the forum, and am the proud owner of a G4 imac, 700, 15 inch and boy do i love her! But she only has 128 ram. I have spoken to someone from a store about more ram (and have a 512 stick on order, $109- is this an okay price) and he tells me that it will run fine beside the 128. I just wanted to check purely because i dont trust salespeople these days.
Also is there good directions on here somewhere on how to install it? I'm relatively tech savvy but pulling the guts out of my new computer is something quite new to me!
Any help or advice would be greatly appeciated

Its a very good price if its 512MB PC133 144-pin SO-DIMM memory. The user upgradable iMac G4 700Mhz memory slot uses PC133 laptop memory.
Sorry but the price sounds a bit too good to be true.

RAM can come cheap and still work.
I got mine from epowermac.com.au for an iBook G4 for $99 and for my iMac G5 for $79 both with lifetime guarantees.
Cheap RAM is out there, you just have to find it.

I got 512MB of RAM for my iBook G4 for $55. But thats DDR RAM. The OP needs PC133 which tends to be significantly more expensive.

Ahhh... see this is why i dont trust salespeople. This is what i had ordered http://www.streetwise.com.au/product_info....roducts_id=1522 When i called up and placed the order i told him what i had and would it run and he said yes. I called up again to cancel the order and was told again that it would be fine but doing my research i found it wont fit. Grr... Thanks for the link, thats actually who i was getting it off.
Where can i get a good 512MB PC133 144-pin SO-DIMM Memory from for a good price? I found one for 189 from streetwise but does anyone know of a better deal out there?? i dont want to buy cheap no-name RAM for the sake of saving a few bucks but i dont want to get jipped either, which being a woman i have experienced in the past.
thanks for your help everyone!

You might be better ordering from the US.Its approximately $115 Australian + postage (which could not be too much) from here
Other World Computing
Somebody else might know of a better place in the US.
Otherwise it $175 here,
ePowermac in Brisbane
EDIT in the US link it and description it shows a full sized sodimm. I am fairly sure you need a half sized sodimm. Can anybody confirm?

Re full sized vs half sized SODIMM. from OWC website-
Quote:
OWC NOTE: There has been confusion about the type, and sizes of memory available to install in iMac Flat Panel systems. The only memory slot that is user accessible is the SO-DIMM memory slot located on the bottom of the computer. This memory slot can accomodate any PC-133 SO-DIMM up to 2" in height. For more information about this issue, see this Apple Developer Note. While it is possible to upgrade the PC-133 SDRAM chip inside the computer, an upgrade of this type requires a qualified service person to perform, and we do not recommend end users to do so. It also voids the Apple warranty on the system.
To install any SO-DIMM in the iMac Flat Panel, first remove the AirPort card (if equipped with one), and install the SO-DIMM as per the instructions provided HERE. Once the memory is installed, reinsert the AirPort card, placing the antenna cable on top of the memory and re-assemble the system.[/b]
|
I would buy a half sized sodimm so you could resell it easier if you wanted.
According to the Apple Developer site this is wrong. YOU NEED A HALF SIZED SODIMM. Sorry about that.
Quote:
|
The specification defines SO-DIMMs with nominal heights of 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0 inches. The iMac can accommodate standard SO-DIMMs with a height of 1.0 or 1.25 inches.[/b]

Oh dear this is all starting to get confusing.... If i call up a supplier can i trust that they will give me the right one? i like the suggestion about buying from the states i'm just worred about shonky merchandise and getting ripped off. Are there reputable RAM brands? Or should i just take it back to where i got it and get them to install it for me and absorb the costs of the service? I really need to upgrade though, cant run 10.4 unless it has more ram.

You'll be OK, as long as you specify when ordering that the RAM is required for your iMac 700 G4. but it will be in the description anyway. I really would not worry about the brand as long as the supplier states it is mac compatible with a lifetime warranty.
From memory (pun unintended) many people have ordered memory from here and had it sent to Australia.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp...4-700)&tabid=AM
Here is a link to to a pricegrabber for iMac 700 RAM
http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/systems/...9774/512MB.html
Save money and install it yourself after printing out the instructions. I did it in the same iMac and it took about 5 minutes.
