Hi all!
Just wanted to pop by and give first impressions and ask a question or two after buying our first Mac today.
Here's what we purchased: - 17" iMac
- 1 Gig Ram
- Logitech S530 Laser KB and Mouse
- MS Office (Have to keep my boss happy
)
- "Instant Music"- For recording all my old vinyl

Firstly, words cannot explain how blown away I was with the time it took from opening the box to getting started and most importantly online! I was expecting it to be quicker than a "Wintel" as there is more stuff to connect etc, but I was still amazed. All up I reckon we were in the OS and online in less than 10mins.
There were a stack of updates as well but I was expecting that. Still much quicker than Windows.
The machine looks great and is great to use. All really straight foward and logical.
A quick question though; We set the Mac up with 1 profile (my wife) and have since added a profile for both myself and my daughter. After we set up the first profile, we installed Office and some software for the cordless keyboard we purchased. Office etc is showing on my wifes profile (of course), but I was wondering if I now need to reinstall these apps again for the new profiles, or is there some way I can apply them to all?

Nope. you dont need to reinstall. You will find all of the applications in the Applications folder in Macintosh HD on the desktop. Then just drag them to your dock
Glad you got a mac, another one to rise up against the evil side (microsoft!)

all applications are in the applications folder, so they dont need to be individually installed, if you want you can drag each office app to the dock from each account so you all have quick access

No, you don't need to reinstall. If you log in using your profile, you should still have access to all applications in the Applications folder. Then just drag the apps you want to use onto your Dock and all should be okay.
EDIT: wow. beaten not once, but twice! (at least I now know I'm correct!)
You talk about the easiness of setting up and getting online - you got to love that! My first Mac, an iMac G3, was just as easy from memory. To be truthful, I didn't think much of OS 9 at the time, but the hardware itself was simply awesome that it outweighed the ungainly OS feel compared to Win95 (or 98). Never looked back, and the Mac just keeps getting better and better, both in hardware and software.

They're all correct!!
But, you can also install Applications into your User>Applications if it's only for your use.
Welcome aboard.

actually, it depends on HOW the software is installed, in particular the logitech control software. when you install it for the first time, it will ask if you want it installed for "just this user" or "all users"
the difference is, one will be installed in your own user library folder,
where as, the latter will install in the Hard drive library folder which can be accessed by all users.

The "trick" I found to getting the Logitech stuff to work was to re-connect the mouse and keyboard again under each profile.
Only then would it allow me to run the software.
I also had a funny moment last night where it seemed that the Mac had "locked up" while we were browsing. I had no mouse movement and the shortcut buttons on the KB were'nt working.
I found however, that both devices had dropped their connection and once I reconnected them, all was good again.
Is anyone else using one of these Keyboards and had the same thing happen??

Not that this is that helpful, but what was the reason for choosing the Logitech wireless gear and not the Apple wireless (bluetooth) keyboard and Mighty Mouse?

Availability and ergonomics.
My wife is the primary user and has athritis in her fingers on her right hand. We tried the Mighty Mouse and although she liked it, wasn't completely comfotable with it.
The Logitech has more of a natural curve to it and hence is a lot easier on her hands.
The Apple wireless wasn't available, although we still wouldn't have purchased anyway because of the mouse.
I was also confident as I have owned a few logitech products including cordless mice/keyboard combo's and have been happy with them.
Hope this one isn't going to be a problem.

I realise you aren't asking me this question but my exp. with both apple products is good and bad!
The BT keyboard I like
The BT mouse is horrible.. from a battery point of view.
It just drains AA batteries (it feels like I need a magazine of batteries attached to keep it powered up). I purchased a super logitech MX lazer number with a dock. Now batteries are not an issue.

I love hearing peoples first experiences...
and makes me remember what that feeling was like over again - as if it was only yesterday!
sigh
I need a new toy - I think - in attempts to relive that experience again myself!

Hi Feej
I switched in January this year and couldn't be happier. Mac is user friendly, attractive and fun. I started using the Microsoft office applications, but now only use word. The mac mail program is terrific, Entourage is clunky in comparison.
I work from home and using my mac is pure joy and makes me just wanna sit down and get stuck into it!
Plus it is great to feel part of a community, thanks to appletalk too.
Hope your wife enjoys it.
:P
