 G4 450 as PVR

Hi All,

I've inherited a G4 450MHz Sawtooth, and intend on using it as a PVR / Media Centre type device but have a few questions.

First - does it have enought grunt? I'm assuming that whatever capture device I get will need to do the MPEG encoding, but is 450MHz enough? It does have 768MB RAM which is good.

2nd - Is it best to go to EyeTV or is there an Internal PCI TV Tuner / MPEG capture solution that works on MacOS X, and also has programmable PVR-style software. I'm also investigating using DVB-T Digital Television a la the EyeTV 410, but I suppose Analog broadcast is fine too.

3rd - Is traditional 802.11b Airport fast enough to stream video to an EyeHome (or similar) or will I need to upgrade it to G. There's a possibility it will be hardwired to the EyeHome but not 100%

Cheers,

I found both 802.11b and g hard to cope with in regards to streaming video. I tried it on both occasions with each standard.

It was streaming to my Shuttle X which occasionally gets used as a HTPC.

I've got a dreambox i use to stream to a g4 (1.2ghz) mac wirelessly (802.11b) via vlc, ( still playing with it to get it running right ) it's in .ts format ( transport stram ) which from memory is essentialy a mpeg2 format tailored to streaming ( with lower bitrate ) streams quite well, wouldn't want to run much else over the wireless network though.

really it'd be more cost than it will be worth.

Good idea though
