The HDD was working fine all day yesterday and suddenly today it's decided to play up! I plugged in the drive and nothing shows on the desktop or finder that the drive is connected. The light in the drive is lighted up but no action.

I have all latest updates installed (10.4.7) 20" intel Imac 1.5 GB RAM. Restarted the machine but no luck yet. Can someone help me out here?

Cheers guys

Unless you have tried the drive on another computer, the drive is stuffed.

If it's the latter, thats very common, and it should be repaired upder warrenty.

Does Disk Utility pick up the drive if you launch it?

Might be corrupt and thats why finder can't pick it up.

could also be the firewireplug if using firewire. I had this problem and luckily was able to change to the other firewire port.

Was it fine before? Sometimes jumper settings are not correct, but if you had it working before it is probably not this.

Could also be the power supply to the hard drive, sometimes when this don't get enough power, they light up, but do not power up the hard drive

open disk utility to see if it recognises that there is a firewire device plugged in. u may see the device(casing) but not the volume. sometimes you may only see the volume but no partition(this is bad).
before you write it off to not working, try use a different firewire cable. i've had problems with faulty cables. second to this, the casings(9/10 times) can get damaged, and if you have another casing, can install the drive and test there..

In addition to the above suggestions, if you have access to another computer try plugging it in to see if it shows up there.

Did you have the firewire drive plugged in when you updated to 10.4.7?
