Must be fairly cheap but not nasty, so basically looking at 2.1 systems from brand names like Altec Lansing and the like. White would be nice but yeah not essential!!
Main purpose is to listen to music, and I don't want to spend too much.

how much is "too much?" this is very subjective, and depends on the person.
$50-$100? $100-$200? Also, is size a problem? Must they be small for a small desk or is any size OK.

I use creature 2's from JBL. I find them very capable, nice and crisp and easily capable of hurting your ear drums.
You can get them for about $195au but if you hunt around a bit and do some cunning pricematching you can get them lower than that.
I also modded mine to have blue LED's. You can find info about that here

Not as pretty as some, but Altec Lansing have always made good speakers, and they can be had for quite cheap. Plenty of different makes and models to choose from.
What's best is they rate speakers in real RMS values, and not these rubbish PMPO business that most dodgey speaker manufacturers use.

yup i have always loved Altec Lansing. I would reccomend the Altec Lansing 621 speakers... They were my previous model, and they performed excellent.
Check for second hand in your Adelaidian Trading Post equivalent, or on eBay. There aren't any on eBay at the moment, but they do pop up occasionally.

I'd also recommend some of the Creative Soundworks range of 2.1 speakers - I've had a few interations of these over the years and have always found them to be very clear, rich and pack quite a punch for their size.
Apparently they've gone down in quality over the past couple of years, a second-hand pair might be an idea as well.

I have a set of JBL Creature IIs, fantastic speakers, I love them.
I'd love to do this to mine, but unfortunately I don't have a soldering iron, and wouldn't feel comfortbale doing it
I hate the green LEDs!!!
