just wanted to confirm this as its a pain opening the iMac 20 times to get something right.

Here is the scenario:

Installed a new hard disk drive, booted off OS 9.1.x CD and installed OS 9 quite easily to the new drive.

Try to boot the machine and i only get the Happy Mac / Folder nothing more.

Was wondering if this was a drive jumper issue, thanks!

Before I start pulling apart an iMac to check, you did set the startup disk settings to the new HD and system? If the jumpers were wrong the drive should not be accessible so it's probably not that.

cheers

EDIT: did these early iMacs have the 8GB limitatation for the boot volume/partition where partitioning was required to use larger drives? just another thought.

Yes. I accessed that from the CD-Rom but used it off the drive.

So you used the 'set startup disk' control panel from the install CD and selected your new 'volume name' as the startup disk and it won't work. Is that it? BTW what is the size of the new drive? (see edit in my first response)

Yes, unless the first partition on the drive is less than 8GB in size, and it contains the OS, it won't boot.
True for all tray load iMacs.

Yes, make sure the first partition is LESS than 8GB. - 7.9 say.
Install the OS and it should boot OK.

Ok thats the first problem

Also i have tried to install OSX with 64mb ram ( i know thats considered insane but I am recieving some ram in the mail later). The imac for some reason kept ticking and not progressing past the finding packages (left for 2 hours), the version im installing is 10.2.0).

Is there any way around this or is this a common issue?
