Hi all,

I'm looking at buying 5 - 10 G4 Powermacs. What would be the best value in terms of these being used in a cluster for video editing rendering. I'd like to get the MMD ones but they still cost $1K odd.

How good would the 450's be ? or the 867's ? I'd like Gigabit network cards.

Dual processor's or single okay ? I'm just wanting to 'test' this for now as I'd be looking at going to G5's in the future (if needed)

I'm picking up 2 dual 450's this weekend, so I hope to give it a good test.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Steve

with video editing, dual processors are by far the best. You can usually pick up pretty decent deals on dual 450's. Like I can see you've got them - dual 533's were also popular and you can probably find a few around!

Yeah I was thinking that the dual processors would be best (and a stack of ram) but I was thinking if the singles would help ? like a 867 over a dual 450 ? (I'm thinking not)

These extra machine will only be used for this, nothing else.

So if I find say 5 cheap G4's that are single 450's they should help ?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Although I have newer machines, I still find that my old G4 450DP is a very useful workhorse for things like video conversions and editting as well as digital RAW file processing. It runs Final Cut Pro 4 quite well as well as iMovie and iDVD.

Ok, not as fast as a G5, but still quite useable and babg for buck it can't be beat. Very reliable - no crashes.

I do have a lot of RAM (1.25gb) and a fast disk with 8mb cache.

I have a Quad G5 but I want to set the G4's up to help with rendering (and so I can do other things wheil it does the work)
