So I finally got a 20" Intel iMac on Thursday, just in time for the long weekend. Nextbyte just happened to have one in store with the upgrades that I wanted, 1gb memory, 500gb harddrive and upgraded graphics. I put a few cd's of photos onto it, probably around 5000 photos or so, and iphoto can supposedly handle up to 250,000, so i wasn't pushing it at all.
But it has now frozen 4 times in iphoto, it happens when i open a picture in full screen. Most of the time it works, but 4 times it has changed to full screen but the picture wont show, its just a black screen with the normal bars and thing around, and then i cant get back to the main thumbnail screen. So i have to force quit the program.
I didn't pay over $3k for this to happen, anyone got any ideas/suggestions? This is my first mac so I'm not sure if I've done something wrong.
Oh and after it did it 2 or 3 times, the next time i opened the program it said it needed to rebuild the photo cache or something like that...
Everything else is sweet, got my programs coming this week.

What kind of photo is it freezing on? Does the photo open ok in something like Graphicconverter?

I have 11,000 photos in my library and don't have problems at all with thumbnails. The number of photos shouldn't be the problem.

You can re-build your iPhoto library by holding down "option" & "apple key (command)" when you restart iPhoto. This will give you some options to rebuild thumbnails or the entire library.

Of course its a good idea to back up your library before doing these but if they are on CD I guess you can leave out this step.

It wasn't on any photo in particular, just seemed to randomly do it. I would go thru and open a few different pics on full screen and then it would decide it didnt want to anymore and just die. I dont have that converter program, i just got the machine and havent installed anything at all on it yet, so its just got the stock programs at the moment.

Don't discount the possibility that you might have some faulty RAM or something causing the issue, after all it is a brand new machine. I'd try running the hardware test CD to see if it picks anything up.

Yeah, test it out because I have not had a single drama with iPhoto and my beast is similar to yours (smaller hard drive).

I've got about 3000 files, mostly from an 8 megapixel...

I assume you have got all the most up to date up grades and stuff?

i got a machine with the same specs as yours last night

Mine came with 10.4.4 installed, where the current system update is at 10.4.6. all of iLife needed to be updated as well. So you'll probably find that a system update is in order.
