The eMac will automatically degauss when starting up or waking from sleep - See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88416

Yes, when you power it up (from cold, i.e., unplug it from the wall, plug it back in and press the power button) you should be hearing a 'pongggg!' sound which is the sound of the degaussing circuitry. There's no other way to do it manually that I know of.

You could also get yourself a degaussing wand from Jaycar or a similar company. I have one and they're a lot of fun.

thanks guys, the degaussing wand sounds fun. this machine is basically never turned off, but does power down overnight.

From wikipedia.org: Degaussing is the process of reducing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field.

Many things can be degaussed, but in computers, the common use of degaussing is with CRT monitors. Have a look at this article (you'll need to scroll down to the bit under degaussing ships).

Not to be confused with the 'bongggg!' sound of 'Happy Mac in C Major' - which, of course, has nothing to do with magnetic fields.
