how come the prices on the apple screens havn't changed? same set of prices for months now.
for the price of the 20inch you can grab a 24inch dell, theres a big 30% gap.
we all know the hardware changes, but whats the trend with the screens?

you pay for style
there isnt a pc monitor on the market that comes close to the cinema displays when it comes to style
id buy an apple 20" over a dell 24" for that reason among others

and I'd buy the dell over the apple any day. And I did.
More real estate, and a buttload more inputs. Right now my powerbook, PC, gamecube and digital set top box are hooked into my 24" dell. I love it.

It's such a shame they're so ugly! I'm with iSlayer on this. I think they'll have more trouble justifying the price in the future, but I'd definitely pay an extra $400 or so on a 24" monitor if it looks as good as the Apple displays do.
Btw, I'm using an Apple 20"... I guess I *could* have bought a 24" Dell instead. Meh.

I'd pay less for a monitor with better ergonomics. Dell LCDs have adjustable height. Nuff said if you're tall and value your back and neck....
I'm going to order a Dell 20" LCD on the weekend - $870. It also comes with standard video inputs, so you can plug in a console. Dell LCDs aren't that ugly, in fact I have no problem with them whatsoever. If you're willing to pay more for a product that does less but looks cooler, then by all means do so. I'll go with the features thanks!

A video pro friend of mine is a Mac diehard, but even he saw the value in a Dell 24" over a Cinema Display.

Hrmm the 20" apple matches alot more to my mac mini, so it was an easy choice. If I wanted it to look like a clone system then I would by a dell screen

also take into consideration the quality of the picture. the apples have a much better panel. if you compare the apple to the phillips/samsung/ etc etc then you will see its on par if not better priced than their high end monitors.

Well, macmate, that's certainly not true for the 20" Apple and Dell which use exactly the same panel. There was some suggestion that in earlier versions the Apple and Dell used different backlights, but the Apple screen's specs have since been upgraded to closely approximate the Dell. I have one of each and the screen quality is identical as far as I can see. The Apple looks prettier, especially if the backs are exposed, but both these screens are against walls, so really the Dell doesn't look that much out of place. The Dell is much better in terms of inputs and ergonomics. I wouldn't buy an Apple again until the price differential was much smaller.
Can't comment on the Apple 23 vs Dell 24 as I haven't been able to see them together.

Interesting, I checked just a couple of weeks ago and these were $1K+!!!
Nice little price drop there
EDIT: Do you know if it (the DELL 20") is an 8-bit or 6-bit panel?

If your doing photography or layout work.. you'll want the Apple... they're colour calibrated at the factory etc etc and are much better than anything other than an EIZO.

g5agogo - the panel is not the only thing that makes a screen good/bad. look at the lacie screens. mitsubishi panels(the older ones anyway) but much much better quality in what drives them. dell tend to over drive their panels and hence you get a brighter screen but worse colour accuracy. The point is that there is a lot more to image quality than panel alone and dell uses the cheapest of everything, often buying the previous generation of panels at a cut down price just to cut costs.
i am not saying the dell is not better value for money for most people, but instead, you get what you pay for.

At that price ($878), the Dell LCD is really tempting... Though I'd like to run my 19" CRT still, and that wouldn't be the best idea with this puny GeForce4mx
