Had a fun experience on the weekend... (NOT!)... I was waiting for my friend at an Big Department store that sold macs (NOT A APPLE STORE)... while waiting, I heard the sales man preach on to poor dumb customer, that Intel macs were no good, and nothing runs on them, and this is why you should by these two g4 powerbook 15inch's for your self and your daughter to run word and surf the net! When sleazy salesman went to get even more ripp off accessories, I had a quite word with the guy, pointing out you are being lied to, and salesman is trying to rip you off, and get rid of old stock, and you should really be getting the Mac book pro, as he is charging you the same price for them anyway! When customer asked sales man (after he returned) why he wasn't selling him a Mac Book Pro (Intel)... he said same old line... oh nothing runs on them (and he didn't have any in stock), they don't work right etc etc.... and you should just buy these two laptops (at 7 grand!).
The customer said " I think I will leave it thanks", the sale dude looked at me and said "what did you say to my customer", "if you don't like what I say LEAVE!", at this time I saw red, and told the sales dude STOP lying to the customer, and telling him half truths, and ripping him off, at this time the salesman let fly a hurl of abuse to me, and anyone else.... by this time the customer, just said.. forget it mate... I not buying anything from you... and walked out.. and thanked me as he walked by! I so HATE sleazy salesman!!!! I think the guy walked out to find a REAL Apple store!

Good work! I hate sales people who do that. It's blatantly disrespectful to the customer and ripping the poor person off.
and as to apple stores doing it, yes, they probably do, but nowhere near as often as department stores.

It's prone to any store looking to off old stock. I blame Apple, they don't tell people when they are about to change product lines, and then when they do, they take months to let resellers etc. sell it at a discounted rate, then the reseller/store is out of pocket.
Not too worry, not to long till we don't have resellers and it all goes online through Apple!
EDIT: I should also mention that the piddlie amount that resellers make as it is, if they take even about $200 off a product they start to lose out, because they have to pay for freight etc. It really does suck. That's why when I worked at a reseller, we had no stock in at all. We could not affoard it! And I do not detest you standing up to them! Good for you! Talk them down! Again though we need to look at the root of the problem!

A well know department store here in Sydney (headquartered in Melbourne) had a so called sale of a 12 inch Powerbook at $200 below the RRP, when i enquired I also realised it had the combo drive and was only 60GB so why wouldn't I pay extra and have the super drive and 80GB at the RRP.
I think most depratment store salespeople see Macs as nice quirky machines for people who hate Windows but aren't really enthusiasts.
Mind you one Apple store I went to seemed more interested in closing his door as it was 10 minutes to closing, rather than talk to me about buying a powerbook.

Or maybe ATAU could set up a register of Apple stores and Apple resellers who members have dealt with and found to be reputable and reliable, and those that ATAU members have dealt with who are just plain bad and dangerous to know?
Not just for sales, but for service and repairs and after-sale support, too. I've talked to a few Big Department Store guys about Apple gear, and they're not all idiots just pushing old stock to reach the store's sales objectives. But some are, obviously, and a register or a list of some sort would help ATAU memebrs (and others) work out who best to deal with in their particular area.
Anyone else think it's an idea worth pursuing - and how we could set it up and make sure it can't be manipulated by the salespeople/stores that will inevitably end up on the list?

Or like the Michael Douglas character in "Falling Down" pointing a gun at the fast-food guy who won't serve him breakfast after 10.30am: "You know how they say 'The customer is always right'? Well, here I am."
