It look slike someone's already swapped the Dual-Core 1.8GHz for a Dual-Core 2GHz, with no apparent problems:

The Intel Core Duo can scale up to 2.5GHz I think, so though it's not worth an upgrade right now (US$450 for a DC 2.0GHZ processor), eventually you'll be able to pick up a DC 2.33- or 2.5-GHz chip for a few hundred bucks, and that would be worth it for a 25% performance increase.

I think Apple's made the right move

CPU upgrades in the future for Intel machines is certainly going to be interesting.

I'll be watching this closely. It would be nice if dropping a new CPU in was as easy as a trip down to the PC dealer.

Be good to see the overclocking potential of these CPUs in general as well as in Macs. B)

Unfortunately, it looks like the processor on a MacBook Pro is soldered to the motherboard. Crap. I was hoping to replace my G5 tower and have an upgrade path in the future...

I suppose with a socketed processor the MBP would be thicker...

Looks like the Intel Mac Mini CPU is socketed, so upgrades should be possible. Pity the graphics chip isn't socketed, too

You'll find nearly all laptops, Apple or PC have soldered CPUs.

Now all we need are towers that use standard, CHEAP, power supplies.
