Hey I have a few macs lying around and I desided to try and link them to work together and split projects and all. So I search for programs and found that Apple has there own Xgrid. Does anyone know how to set the compouters up. I will be using Imac G3s. This is just an idea for fun Any ideas would be great...

What apps are you trying to farm out?

Logic has a separate "Logic Node" app that comes on the install CD. Not sure about others.

I read a bit more on Xgrid and it turns out that it really isn't what I want. What I want is to be able to have the imacs working together to run a program or something so that it speeds up. Any ideas?

Sounds like fun - but I believe you need a OS X Server 10.4 for the Xgrid Admin utility on one machine. The basic Xgrid functionality however, is installed under every install of 10.4. Going off Apple's PDF I gather a version of Xgrid can also be downloaded for 10.3 - probably a better bet as installing 10.4 can be a struggle on lowly iMacs

In addition, unless you've running particularly CPU intensive program, running a cluster will not result in much of a performance boost.

Cluster computing like Xgrid is for running large batch-styled tasks... not for running Microsoft Word at blazing speeds....
Apps like Final Cut Pro, and Logic can use these because they are processing batched data... Regular apps have limited use for such things, since most tasks are on-demand.

What apps do you want to run faster?

Your best shot for standard GUI apps... either throw in more RAM, or buy a faster computer...

I was thinking mainly of Garageband, iMovie and games but it seems that it really isn't worth it..
