I'm surprised this hasn't already posted (unless I've missed it, I did triple check)
I ordered an iMac G5 last week (hasn't shipped yet). Apple called and asked if I wanted to get the Intel instead. I've had a look at the specs and so forth. The only difference I can see is screen spanning and of course the processor. Whilst screen spanning would be very nice, is it worth the potential bugs & what not? What would you do? I'm having trouble making up my mind.
I will mainly be using the iMac for internet, word processing, multimedia, & Garagebanding.
Thanks
p53

Yeah get the intel. I'm sure Apple have done plenty of tests to make sure things will run ok. If you're worried you can always get Apple Care.

That's a good call. Logic probably would be one app that you do want running native.
However... didn't SJ say that "all these Apple pro apps will have universal binaries by march" (the Logic box was shown on screen). I think he also may have said something about it being a non-paid update, but don't quote me on that.
So... I'd probably go for the Intel iMac. You might have some dramas to begin with, but you'd be getting a 2x faster mac. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how vital speed is for audio work.

Any idea how much the second hand doorstops... err... I mean, the three month old iMac 20" PPC models would be?
I'm guessing the resale value of my machine has plummeted but it'd still be nice to know.
Is there any information on the new graphics card in the new iMacs? Is it upgradeable? I'm assuming now that Macs are x86 based that we're going to get the benefits of the x86 world, like decent video cards and greater expandability options.

In my view the old axiom 'never buy the first of a brand new model' applies....wait until the 'MkII' versions appear. We have funding to purchase replacements for our G5 towers at work, but I'll be waiting until the last minute (close to the end of the FY) before a final decision. Reliability is far more important to us.
That said, with your situation and if this is essentially as personal use Mac, I'd be tempted to go with the Intel as it's less likely to be a problem esp if your using essentially Apple developed software (GarageBand).
What worries me though is that there are some suggestions that Apple has 'rushed' these new models out up to 6 months ahead of original schedule......

It seems like they're using "standard" Intel hardware... so there's testing being done outside of the Apple R&D. That's what (maybe falsely) makes me think these might be good from the start.
