I have just purchased a new 20" 2.1Ghz iMac G5 (remote model).

When the iMac is under a moderate or higher load, the fan noise changes to a very annoying buzzing sound, like that of a 'remote model aeroplane'. The sound should be more comparable to that of 'soft air movement'.

Has anyone experienced similar isses with the current iMac G5 or earlier models?

Based on this experience I would not recommend the new iMac G5.

Apparently this is a common problem with the new 20" Imac if you read the forums on the apple website. The 17" (iSight) hasn't had as many reports of this.
Maybe take it back to where you bought it and they may be able to do something for you.

This is odd. My Rev A 17" inch iMac G5, bought Christmas 2004, has the same problem.

I would have thought Apple should have fixed this by now?

Someone called ScienceMan has a website about my model of iMac G5, with a video showing the sound of the faulty/buzzing CPU fan compared to the other fans. Check it out to see if it's the same buzzing sound.

I often put my 20" iMac under heavy load and I have the CPU setting on high and only very, very rarely do I get the fan going into uber-spastic mode. I'd say your machine is either faulty or you've got it in a spot where it's not getting enough cool air.

I got the 20" for a week now. It hardly is noisy. Only when I did a SU the fans made a bit of noise with the reboot. But that is normal.

Indeed, look if you have enough free air around your machine..and maybe check the cpu temperature. Also, I hope it is not in a really warm spot in the house?

I have a 17" 2Ghz and the fan is normally a quiet hum until there's a load on the CPU then it raises significantly, but not the downright roar it got to when I did an 'fsck -f' in single user mode. Got a bit concerned there for a while but it setlled down once I exited and let it boot up OSX.

Not sure why it does this in single user mode but it's consistant.

it could be a logic board problem, take it to your local applecentre and let them take a look.

you may also want to try PRAM reset, or check the ram.
