hi all, this is my first post, be gentle im glad to find a mac community in aus
heres my story.. im wondering if anyone can help me out for some answers
its taken me amost a year to get enough cash together for a mac mini.. i placed an order for a bto mini 1.42/100gig hd/dialup modem/airport etc.. in september...i was told i should have it in 5-6 weeks, but it hasnt shown up yet... since ive ordered it theres been alot of buzz around a intel mini comming in january... so im wondering what happens when i finally get it, if a intel mini comes out , do i have any way to return it to apple for an upgrade or refund? is there a grace period or soemthing after i take delivery?
im hoping somebody who has experience dealing with apple (this is my first mac! and it looks like i may have procrastinated too long..or not long enough ...hehe) would be able to give me some advice on if its possible to return it if a new one comes out in the near future (macworld jan 6?) obviously im not going to keep it boxed up till then ..after all its just a rumour, im not entirely insane hehe so either i return it opened ?(and built to order?) or sell it on ebay!
if anyone has any ideas that would be great..id realy apreciate it
waiting impatiently for my mini

You wouldn't be able to return it after opening it, and maybe not even if it was not opened at all! You'd have to sell it second hand, undoubtably for considerably less than you paid for it.

yeah im not too keen to sell it unopened ..as the rumours are just rumours..and wouldnt i look like an idiot re buying the same system ? hehe ..annd probably waiting another 8 weeks haha lol
i dont think i can cancel the order, as it is built to order and i have already payed 900 deposit (my idea not theres..then i couldnt spend the money i had saved hhehe)
thinking if i put it on ebay for 949 buy me now (the price of the 1.4 with combo and 80gig no modem..sounds fair to me for a month old 1300 dollar version hehe) i could get a taker...but yeah..not till january 7th at least hehehe

i dont know it could be better just to keep it, the way apple are going at the moment, jobs will intro the new intel mac mini and say its shipping in febuary, then you will order that and it wont be another 5 months till you get it :P

I agree with ipod_man, if you think the wait for your current Mac is long, it will be nothing compared to the wait for the first Intel based Mac.
IMHO, at the current moment I would personally prefer to get an PPC mini over an Intel based mini anyway. Apart from avoiding any 'bugs' that might occur with a Rev A product, just about every app is PPC based. Even though the intel's will have Rosetta, I still prefer to run things native instead of under emulation

The return period for Apple is 10 days I think. Plus a restocking fee I believe.
If you don't/can't cancel it, then you'll have to sell it 2nd hand....... and if intel mac mini's are release then you'll get considerably less than what you paid (particularly if they have the rumoured new features and are at the same price level).
Have you call the Apple store and inquired as to whether you can cancel it? If they won't allow it, perhaps you could suggest store credit which you can use after macworld SF

If the deposit was your idea (make use you can prove this), and you were not told that it was not refundable then you can cancel your order with a full refund. The store where you placed you order would have a very hard time keeping your deposit unless you explicitly agreed to no refund terms. A word of advice - never pay more than 10% deposit. If you think you will spend the rest of the money while waiting, give it to your mother!. Good luck.

Actually, certainly under Victorian law, you can cancel your order and get your money back, as they haven't been able to supply.
Different story if they ring you up and say "It's here", and you say "Oh, I changed my mind". But if you say "sorry, cant wait any longer, money back pls", they have to refund, as they haven't supplied (or even made available to supply) you anything.

i agree with feez.. its probably not the besst idea to get the first version of anything..but the thought of iLife 06 possibly having frontrow for all..and a remote for the mini would be exactly what i was looking for ....
maybe a more usefull question might be is there any kind of remote control/front row-esqe solution out thats worth looking at, i know of the airclick but i was hoping for something more graphical...as i said frontrow would be so perfect its not funny (the mini will graduate to the tv as soon as i have enough for a 17 inch pbook running an intel chip then its goodbye desktops forever! hehe)

The closest thing I have at the moment is a DVICO card in my G5 for which third party drivers for both the card and remote control are available. You don't get the fancy front-row interface for anything, just the ability to use Applescript to control applications of your choosing.
