It's a sad day. My very first and beloved Mac, my iMac DV 500mhz has a jammed slot-load DVD-ROM drive.
There is a disk currently in it that cannot be ejected by any means I can think of. I've also tried rebooting and holding down the mouse button, but the drive tries in vain to eject the disk. The disk in there is still able to be read, just not ejected.
So, I've no idea how to take out the slot-load from the iMac G3 to have a look at and possibly replace. Can anyone point me in the direction of some instructions? I've spent the last 30mins googling to no avail.
Also, any good places where I could get a slot-load DVD-ROM or CD-R/DVD-ROM drive on the cheap should I need a replacement?

There's a how-to with pictures somewhere in these forums. Also, you can google for the iMac service manual, or download it from here - http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/
It describes the procedure clearly and with diagrams.
It's pretty easy - just dont drop any screws inside or you'll be taking more apart than you need to!

Yup. A no go on that option too!
Kallikak - thanks for the link. Very helpful. Going into Mac surgery in an hour or so

Operation successful. Little iMac back up and running with no problems.
Mind you, I couldn't for the life of me see what the problem was:
... though, I am 20c the richer.
Which reminds me, words will have to be had to my 2yo son. 'No, the iMac is not a vending machine!'
Incidentally, this is not the first time the slot-load has been damaged. The 1st time was when my daughter was 2yo and had pushed a paper clip into the DVD drive and wrecked the motor. Fortunately, the replacement of the drive was 'covered' under Apple Care (the said paperclip having been removed prior to the appearance at the Apple centre)

If it comes up, you could ask me,... or Ric (macmate) we usually have the odd one floating around from an iMac with dead Analogue board.

the drive in my iMac G4 DV started jamming a couple of years ago - just out of warranty and the cost for replacement is worth more than I would get if I sold the thing now, and then no one wants it because the drive jams.
My fix is very dubious but works. I use tweezers and grab the edge of the disc as it is trying to be ejected. This computer is hardly used these days and I mostly use an external burner/drive to read CDs.
