Title and description says it all really. Can a powerbook slot loading combo drive be put into a slot loading iMac?

It would depend on which slot loading drive from what Powerbook. If the drive, as ipod man says, has a ribbon cable connector, then it will work.

the G3 imac's use slimline CD drives, which is the drive that powerbooks use, so it could, all depends on the connection.

My iMac 350 uses the slim CD drive - and that's the target. The fellow I want to get this from told me the drive was actually taken from an iMac, but he didn't say which model. It's one of the rectangular shaped ones with the corner cut out, and he mentioned needing a Torx screwdriver to remove it. I don't think I used my torx screwdriver when I changed from the original CD-ROM to a DVD-ROM in my iMac, so it must have come from a different model than mine...

Yes it will.
After upgrading to a DVD RW/DVD RAM, I put the slot loading CD-RW from my PBG4 1.5GHz into the removeable cradle of my old PBG3 333 Lombard first, and then into my iMac G3 333 Rev D, which had a tray load CD-ROM originally.

The slot load drives will fit anywhere a slim tray load has been.
-Jaffa, the old iMacs use a slim tray load, not the desktop PC variety.

The connection arrangement for the drive in an iMac G3 (Rev.D I'm talking) has the drive connected into a cradle first, which then has a cable and multi pin connector back to the machine. The bare drive connector is same for a tray or a slot load.
