Hi All!

I just purchased a G5 tower that is slowly winging its way west. It is a single 1.8Ghz model (Late 2004), with CTO options (so far it has bluetooth). The company I purchased it from says that it has PCI-X slots, but only 4 ram slots. From my knowledge, the only PCI-X model was the original 1.8 Single (1.6/1.8/2.0DP vintage), which also had 8 ram slots.

Was there any way those later model 1.8s could be ordered with PCI-X slots?

Its not of a real concern to me whether it has PCI or PCI-X slots, other than the original 1.8 had the 900Mhz bus.

Nope, only PCI on the late 2004 models...

And if it is a late 2004, it will have a 600Mhz bus.

btw, just make sure it is running the latest firmware when you get it to solve all the crashing issues.

Thought so. Either I have been sent the wrong model, emailled the wrong serial number, or their advertising is incorrect :-(

From what it sounds like, the fact you mention "Late 2004" and it has 4 ram slots would make me think that the person you are getting it from is unaware of the fact that it does not have PCI-X and that it is a 1.8Ghz, 600Mhz bus late 04 machine.

They would have only known about the Late 2004 bit if they have access to GSX (service techs use this to order parts etc). I'm a tech, so I just looked up the serial number.

I guess the good thing about the machine that it was CTO'd with a 250Gig HD and bluetooth. Plus it has warranty until June 2006 :-) I'll be getting Applecare out on this baby!

good luck with it, yeah get AppleC...I just went thru a drama buying 'firesale' stock. I picked-up a BTO 2ghz PCI-X with 250gb/BT/R9800 Pro that was until I discovered I couldn't get it running pro apps properly (Compressor) - every-day stuff ran without a hitch.
Seems it was a 2003 model that was probably plagued all its life (I didn't know how old it was)

* kernel panics
* PS supply chirping
* roaring fans
* unusable analoge audio out (noise interference)

Frustration and cold-feet about these 'refurbs' eventually lead me way over the initial budget to the machine in my sig.

Well, apart from the chirping PS and the sleep / 2hr crashing, which has now been fixed, my 1.8 has been a dream machine.

Analogue audio is fine, no noise at all

Never has to spin the fans faster than minimum (except briefly, like 1 second when it wakes from sleep), and loaded up with ram, it flies.

Now the firmware has been fixed, I couldn't love the machine more.

I'm looking forward to mine arriving, especially with the extras like Bluetooth and a 250Gb drive. Just hanging to connect up the EyeTV and registering Sailing Clicker. And the Tungsten T is just waiting to be the willing remote control.... :-)

Just hanging out for Friday......
