Hi,

I have an imac G3 with a faulty hard drive (i Think). What happens, when you try to format it, it just crashes in setup (10.3). does anyone have an idea on how to "force" it to format or partition?

If no-one has any idea, can anyone tell me where I can obtain a suitable hard drive replacement? I was thinking eBay, but I read somewhere you need a certain size/type.

Any ideas?

Hmm what OS did you have on it previously?

It could prehaps be that your iMac requires a firmware update before it can run Panther.

Try the testing the HD via booting from a disk or another Mac and then running a Disk Utility (or OS version equivilant).

I'm guessing that now you may have an unbootable imac but if it is running any firmware (Boot ROM version under OS 9) prior to 4.1.9f you cannot install 10.2.x or above. The installer should tell you this. (and the firmware can only be updated from within OS 9.x.x and will NOT work from the classic environment from OS X) Are you sure you are using a universal installer? Or is someone elses machine specific update CD/DVD set?
