I have a Centris 660AV (with a 14" AppleVision that seems to emit a buzzing noise but works) and
a Performa 450 (LCIII).

What could I use these macs for? I would rather find a use for them then just throw them away.

I use my old Performa as a backup email and web server when I need to do maintenance work on my 10.3 server.

It'd make a handy doorstop.

I've been giving old macs away to family members. They're usually more than happy to take them.

You can also donate computers to charities.

The Centris/Quadra 660AV can be used for video input/output - you could plug a VCR or DVD into it and use it as a glorified TV.

There are also some amazingly good 68K games out there too, see Mac the underdogs for a good few.

In terms of upgrading the machine, some 72-pin RAM or a bigger SCSI disk or SCSI CD-ROM can be installed fairly easily.

It's also a great machine to give to someone who wants to use it for basic word processing or email (you're pushing it to browse the net though).

Games or nothing pretty much in terms of uses. I wouldn't afflict such machines upon anyone I liked when you can get a p3 basically for free nowadays.

Getting all the older software, hardware going on them is an interesting voyage into digital history - & tricking them out is pretty rewarding if you want to make an Uber 68k.

The centris 660AV is a pretty decent 68k.

The 660AV is souped up with 64Mb ram and a 12X CD, "huge" 1Gb SCSI HDD. It runs 8.1 quite briskly.

Nice one They're so cheap to upgrade, 68K Macs - to me it's a great feeling knowing you have the machine maxed out with components that would have cost thousands in their day, or upgraded well beyond factory specificiations.

Hope you find a good few games to run on it - can't go past Marathon, Sierra graphical adventure games, and others

I remeber reading in an old issue of MacAddict magzine somebody hooking their old 68K up to a sensor attached to a sliding door, and it would make a Star Trek style "whoosh" noise when the door opened......

I used a couple of LC xxxs as stands for CRT imacs (but then my physical desktop is 2.5m x 1.5m and so space or size of 'footprints' are not an issue)
