Soo, who has played with the new PM G5 DCs? Have you noticed the power-cord? How it doesn't bloody well fit into most Australian power sockets! Bloody heck, I understand the thicker cable, the phatter socket on the machine it-self but what the heck is with making the Earth pin wider than the width of the Earth socket!
Apple are bastards.

It is a standard cable, available in all countries independantly of Apple...
The quad sucks more power than a "Kettle cord" can handle, so they've had to up the cord to the next level.
If you want four CPUS, then you're going to need a lot of power.

When i recieved my dual core 2.3 it has a white one (the cable with issues) and a black one that i'm using and works fine. Hopefully when i recieve my quad it will have the right power cable first time around.

Sure. I'm fine with them upping the cable gauge. But if it doesn't fit into a normal socket, it will cause more problems in the long run as people will buy a cable an under-spec cable that fits into a normal socket.

Here are some pics of it:
http://www.hartland.com.au/hartland/iecconn.html | At the bottom of the list is the C19, Apple's new Quad Powermac cord. There isn't an issue of people using the wrong cable, since the C19 is a different shape to the C13 (kettle cable).

Hey Disko, are you sure that's right?? The cord in question has a 15amp earth pin on it. If the new quads need 15amps to run they will trip most house hold fuses. They would be drawing as much power as your average welding unit.
I managed to "aquire" a G5 dual during the period when resellers weren't allowed to release them (due to the power cable issue) and simply made a work around by making my own extension cord with a standard male plug and a 15amp female plug ( naughty me) It worked fine, and none of my fuses popped. I realise that it's not a quad, but I would be surprised if the quad sucks 15amps.
Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

I still don't see the need for this cable given the following Apple specs:
"Maximum current: At least 10A (low-voltage range) or 5A (high-voltage range)"
with the high voltage range being 200 to 240 VAC.
So, why use a 16 Amp rated cable when a 5 Amp or 10 Amp, for US voltage, is specified as sufficient? Probably because the Apple website electrical specs are understating current drain.

Isn't it just a simple case of Apple supplying the wrong cable?
That was my understanding of it (based on e-mails sent out from Apple)...
Cheers,

I'm tipping someone in China just ticked the wrong box on a form and we ended up with a batch of power cables with 15amp earth pins Wouldn't be the first time.
Oh well, if you've got $10 and a Bunnings locally, it's not too hard to fix

No, it's definately a C19 on the quad... This thing can't have a c13 plugged into it.

The earth pin is larger than usual on the cable so it will not fit into your regular wall socket. the replacement is like a normal cable. I post a pic later but the earth pin on the original is slightly larger so like dan said you have to either make your own or get a replacement

Yeah, but they make a normal 10 amp version of the C19 (see attached pic. Assuming the attachment worked )
I think the simple answer is the right one. Apple just made a boo boo.
Like I said before, I can't see a practical reason to ship a 15amp lead for a 10amp computer.
Unless Apple just want a monopoly on the G5 cable market . . . . . big $$

I wonder how much power a quad would pull at the absolute maximum? I mean, with all the pci slots active and busy, CPUs maxed out... could it go beyond a C13's spec?
