Thumbs up

Hi All,

I received an email about a refurb sale today from Desktop Power authorised reseller and was offered a refurbished 1.42Ghz/256Mhz/80G mac mini for $699 (+ $25 shipping) which includes, as a bonus, applecare extended 3-year warranty.

what are peoples thoughts on this???

I have heard mixed thoughts on bluetooth and i was planning plugging this straight into my modem so no need for airport (although would be nice).

I can install 1G of RAM myself, though it would cost $230 extra for it to come installed...

For me the applecare is the selling point (i can get the newer model for $850 EDU with 512 and wireless)

any thoughts (i have had one put aside just need to ransfer funds)...

OR

???

[apologies if posted in wroing section - i asked if they had the heads-up about the new model.... but they now probably less the most peeps on here]

refurbished is the key word - hence the applecare.

Sounds like a good deal to me with the applecare.

Enjoy

I thought it was a good deal. Next Q is should i get a 1G RAM chip for $230

I have read a guide about self-installing RAM and i can get a 1G chip for a little under $200 and install myself...

What are peoples experiences with installingn RAM in a mini

From iSlayer's trading forum thread, even those with mac experience can still have problems.

I stripped down an older imac this year and know how much wotk is involve in that!

Should i pay the extra for the RAM installed, or save $40-50 and install myself??

Its pretty easy to install RAM in a mini, but if you're uncomfortable with it, then get a tech to do it.

Adding ram is easy, I did mine. Just grab the service guide off the web somewhere and follow it. You will need to go buy a tool to use, and it will work as the manual says.

Yeah, a putty knife, to be exact.

Two putty knives actually make the job of prising open the Mini easier.

Reduces the amount of chipping getting the knife into the unopened side.

I have bought one of these from the sale.
I am typing on the unit now and it hasn't missed a beat so far. Only problem was that when I got to the car something told me to check it, and when I opened the box there wasn't a DVI-VGA adapter.
I got the adapter and when I got home realised that I didn't get any of the OS-X disks.
As i live about an hour away they are posting them out to me.

So the advice I give is to check that everything is there before you leave.
