Hi all

I can understand if we don't all get frontrow as a download (hope we do) as it seems to be linked to the builtin remote somewhat.

but

does anyone think photobooth will come as part of 10.4.3 or as software update or as part of .mac

or is it linked to the newer builtin isight and the display's ability to flash in the new iMac. Surely if we are running Cinema displays or macs from a certain year onwards we could handle it and our current isights would seem up to the task one would think.

Thoughts comments --

My guess is that 'front row' is just software, so as long as you have imagecore, you should be able to run it... and also, i'm guessing the new PowerBooks and PowerMacs will also have it! maybe even the Mini, when it officially gets the update. So yeah, ... could be part of 10.4.3 ...

I'm sure most macs with an iSight camera could handle photobooth, but I don't think every computer will be getting it anytime soon. It seems to be a simple app designed primarily to advertise the new built in iSight. It will definately be built into the system in Leopard, although I somehow doubt they'll give it out as part of 10.4.3. We have to remeber they're trying to sell computers and make a profit. Perhaps they'll give it free though on a CD if people buy a new iSight from them or with every new mac to tempt people to buy an iSight. As for part of .Mac, that's a greater probabilty since recent rumours suggested sales of the subscription service were lagging.

I think Apple will use one of two strategies. Frontrow and Photobooth (to a lesser degree) are worth paying for - so, either they will:

a) Release all new desktop mac's with the apple remote and the receiver giving people an extra incentive to upgrade their macs. It is a hardware thing ostensibly, and is pretty compelling to some people.

B) Apple will include both applications as part of iLife 06 and release a bluetooth version of the remote. Fattens up iLife and it is really quite digital lifestyely. But sadly the rest of us non-iMacos will have to wait until January for that.

Somehow doubt you ipod_man.
iLife apps are all about creating, editing and organizing peoples digital media. This is just a program to take your photo and add some fun effects before making them your display picture/saving them etc.

Wasn't there an appletalk news item recently about Apple having a patent for a camera build into the hinge or the lid or something? Sort of makes sense now.

I remember reading about a new iSight coming up - seems like photobooth belongs on the install cd for that product...

i always thought that iLife was about intergration, and front row DEFANITLY revolutionises the intergration so it could bet there, or it could be in teh 10.4.3 update.. it is 105mb... :S

Not necessarily Andrew. iLife is about "the digital lifestyle" and whilst Frontrow isn't so much for creative purposes, like iTunes it is organisational and surely forms another extension to your digital life.

agreed - photobooth seems linked to the iSight

maybe through the old iSight updater perhaps

Has to come as part of something doesn't it - can't just be a lone app made for macs after Oct 2005

updates are fun - lets wait again

This notice on the Apple Store for its Remote kinda disappointed me to have FrontRow...

Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in Infrared (IR) receiver.
Without IR built into my 2004 PB, it's pretty much less fun to have FrontRow having to control from keyboard/touchpad.. So I don't even think that it will be available for us...

no doubt there will be hacks to make it work just like the iSight, apple made it inbuilt that it will not work on machines under 600mhz, they made that hack iGlasses or something and it made it work on anything.

Sorry, I thought ipod_man was talking about photo booth - not Frontrow. They could easily add Frontrow to iLife '06, and I'm quite sure they will, although we'd have to buy a new computer to make it work since they're probably not going to be selling an optional IR USB connector with it.
