It will, it does. It just does not use the 64 bit kernel. You get dropped the 32 bit version by default.

The list shows that almost every bit of hardware does not, by default, run in 64 bit mode. I'd say that's because a lot of Apps still don't run in 64 bit fully yet either.

lol, same with Microsoft - their Office apps and IE are still 32-bit.

With SL, even those 64bit machines that cannot boot a 64bit kernel will run 64bit apps just fine. The fact that the kernel is 32bit doesn't matter much in my experience.

I like that they've moved away from big, giant glossy 'X's towards nice nature photography.

The person who took those photo's lives near Dublin.
Wonder if the Apple Ninja's have been dispatched?

But, but, but - s/he's running Photoshop on his/her computer! Obviously a fake!

As for the whole 32/64-bit kernel thing: no-one except a few geeks on Mac forums cares (at this stage)! After all, all applications work without having to faff around switching system preferences between 32-bit and 64-bit as you do in the 64-bit kernel. As such, there really isn't any benefit of a wide deployment by Apple just yet. Indeed, the whole philosophy of 10.6 may be to smooth the way for a 64-bit kernel in 10.7, the same way 10.5 smoothed the way for the full transition to Intel in 10.6. Time will tell I guess.

Code:
ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
which would tell me if my EFI was 32 or 64 bit. That, combined with
Code:
uname -a
will tell me if I'm running a 64 or 32-bit kernel, but only if I'm running Snow Leopard.

So yeah,

Hmmm

For those running the GM - is a speed difference noticeable in basic use of the OS?

I used a program called BBedit. I use that to edit .plist extensions. It will allow you to edit it while it is in use, however it will require your password as it needs root authentication.

let me know if you get stuck, and I can help you

It's all good - rebooted using Leopard and edited the file there.

Still - as I suspected - not allowing me to load the 64 bit kernel.

What kind of Mac and EFI (see bennyling's post above)?

arn from MacRumors has confirmation that the retail box/packaging/discs are real. Of course they are.

As I posted - I know that my machine is not in the list (iMac 8.1 does 64bit) my iMac is 7.1. However it does have a 64 bit EFI.

People who paid a LOT of money for a computer that proudly said "64 bit workstation" on the side of the box are a little miffed.

The same could be said for folks that bought a G5 Power Mac. Technology moves on - as long as Apple are not restricting it for a false reason then I have no problem with this.

Apple have always used OS X to sell Computers. I have no problem with them continuing to do so.
