Default Duplicate files in HDD

I have been doing some tidying up of files on my Macbook, and when I open a Finder window and look at what I have done looking through the "Search For" Today,Yesterday,Past week, etc, All Documents, I see heaps of duplicate files, images from MSN and other things I have used. Why does Mac OS X do this? How do I prevent all these duplicate files? How do I clean these duplicates from my Mac?

I have downloaded OnyX and used this app to do lots of cleaning up but these duplicate files (mostly pictures) still exist.

Any advice on how to keep my Mac "clean"?

iPhoto is a cheeky bugger in that it saves multiple versions of the same image, depending on input and view. Best leave them well alone.

Otherwise, there's 'Chipmunk', which is pretty good at sleuthing down duplicate files for you.
