Default Vmware - XP & OS X open at the same time?

Hi all,

I am a new user to VMware and wanting to drag some video files from a LAN connection on XP to the OS X desktop or documents.

Is there anyway I can switch between XP and OS X to change the view/settings?

Perhaps have both side by side or in smaller windows?

Cheers

You can't simply drag and drop them.

Windows XP CANNOT read OS X's file system, meaning that dragging files from one to another won't work.

The easiest way is to plug in a USB drive, connect it to your XP VM, drag the files to it, then disconnect it from VMware and then drag the files from the USB to OS X.

If you don't have a USB drive, you could always e-mail the files to yourself.

EDIT: just realised that the OP was talking about video files.. How big are we talking?

That probably works but it pretty backwards. Why not just set your OSX hard drive up as a shared drive in fusion? That's what I do.

VMWare Fusion implements all the fanciness to allow drag and dropping from the Host OS (OS X) to the guest OS (XP), you can definitely do it. All you need to do is make your VMWare window smaller so that you can see both, and then just drag and drop between them. I do it here at work everyday

em...last I checked (i.e. a day or two ago) if you're running XP in VMWare as a window (i.e. not fullscreen and not unity) you can drag files from Windows to OS X and vice versa quite happily.

The way I run it is with Spaces. I have VMWare fullscreen in space 2 and if I need to drag a file to XP I click and hold in Finder, hotkey to space 2 (+2) and drop in windows. (doesn't work the other way around as XP has no knowledge of spaces...to do the reverse I quickly go out of fullscreen, drag the file from XP to OS X and then fullscreen it again).

Shared folders is also another way to transfer files back and forth.

Exactly! I've never had a problem dragging and dropping between XP, Vista, Windows 7 or OS X.

Make sure you have VMware Tools installed.

Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools

Not trying to be unhelpful but you don't want to read a few pages of the manual first then ask slightly more tricky questions...

Either change the screen resolution inside Windows like you normally would (Display properties inside Control Panel or right click Desktop, properties) or resize the window like any other OS X application.
